Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Well, my latest was finding some JBL L-40's along side the road (waiting for garbage pick up..) the woofers needed surrounds and the veneer needed oiling.. They sound very nice.. good enough for the workshop (along with the other 30 or so pair sitting there collecting dust.)

Hello, my name is Dan and I am addicted to speakers....

Not For Sale!

not that any of my gear is or ever was for sale. hhmmmm...how do i word this without sparking a 4 day free-for-all rant questioning my motives?? went out to the "drop 'n' shop" (a fairly local garbage dump that has a staff that puts all the good looking stuff in a quonset hut and takes offers) yesterday for a browse, as i often do when i have a few bucks and the car is running ok, and what do i spy? the sweetest, rarest, most beautifully designed '50s (i think, one great website says the company operated from 50-58, they also made "fleetwood t.v.'s") tube-powered shortwave/am stereo in a big cabinet with 2 big speakers and 2 little tweeters behind shiny gold cloth. made in canada by the "electrical products mfg. co. ltd." cabinet designed by "dumont custom stereo hi-fi." robertson screws throughout! paid $10 canadian for it!!!!i wish i had a digital camera!! i googled it and could only find a couple of references to the company that made the radio, and none about dumont. in the interest of "contributing," i'd like to provide any information anyone wants me to check out on this thing. i can scan the card i found inside that has the tube layout if anyone has any interest in hearing about it. i did see in my searching an old harmon kardon with a very similar tube layout. best part: it works like a hot damn! i've been bathing in the glow of the tubes all night! listening to the lovely tone on both the am (or b.c. as it's called in gold on the glass) and shortwave. can't sleep because my cheeks are too sore from grinning! i think i'm starting to feel some karma!! or maybe satan wants to oscillate my metallic sonatas. in any case i'm loving the sound and will continue to do so as long as we both shall live. just wanted to share. hopefully all of the people who could appreciate this haven't got me on "ignore" already.

How about a near mint Thorens TD160 B MKII with Grace 707, Grado Silver and the big, thick and heavy rubber "platter matter" mat for $9.00?
I got it at the same place I got my TD321 with a Basik arm and a Linn cart a year ago for $4.99. I guess it's gotta be the inflation :D

thanks for the tips, Doc!

i will check those links out. i just googled "du mont" and was reading about a guy named Du Mont that made t.v.'s in the 30's and 40's. maybe this cabinet used to have a little t.v. below the radio? can't believe i didn't think to look for du [space] mont right away. DUH.

The Best of My Best Thrifty Treasures

I think I may have already shared some of these in my first thread here, but since it's come up again I'll take the opportunity to crow a little:

Absolutely PRISTINE JBL Apollos, "001" systems, untouched-$30.00

Four sequentially numbered Heresy IIs-Near Mint-$100.00

Pair of Paradigm Titans, Version 1-Very Good Condition-$3.00

"Package Deal"-Klipsch KG-4s-MINT, Yamaha RX-330,MINT, Optonica RT-1515, MINT except it needs belts,$100.00 for all

Sansui 2000X-MINT, $20.00

Denon DP-30L,Near Mint-$12.00

Nakamichi BX-1, MINT, $10.00 (Obviously had to refurbish all the rubber)

Sherwood S-7300, MINT but a little tired (caps and alignment), $20.00

These are the best "deals" I've had so far, and they all came from the same (2) thrifts except the turntable which was a rare Salvation Army score.

Forgot One

A VERY generous soul over at Lansing GAVE me a pair of C40 cabinets. I put the components from the Apollos in the C40s and sold the empty boxes. The C40s weren't anywhere near mint, but after sanding and a fresh coat of lacquer are pretty damn nice. They came with original grille cloth and badges as well.

electronic, but not audio

Recently found an HP 15c calculator for $4.95. This was THE geeky engineer calculator to have in the 80's. I still have & use mine daily; you'll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers...
I saw what they are going for on eprey, but this goes to my Sis-in-law who had hers stolen & has wanted another ever since.

Let's see... best finds...

1. Smaller Advents $6.99 for the pair - very good condition
2. Kenwood KA-7100 amp $35 - excellent condition
3. Pioneer S 1010 speakers - $60 for the pair - need surrounds - retail for $1300
4. Pioneer CT-F700 cassette deck $12.99 - very near mint condition

More to come as I think about them...

Dumont made my first ever "real" stereo system. Bought it from an old lady with alllowance money when i was about 13yrs old, $50 IIRC. Had AM/FM and a Garrard table with ceramic Astatic cartridge. Nice cabinet, and beautiful tube sound.

I've had many many many. But, my favorite was a McIntosh MC 2100, mint condition, no lettering damage, for $30. But, I have to say to nukemicrosoft, a Delphi for $70, WOW................wow.

Hehe, my whole current bedroom system...

Marantz 2325 reciever w/ cabinet - $6

Marantz 5025b dolby cassette deck - $3

Sansui SR 535 Turntable - $4

Sansui SP 200 speakers - $14

Bose 201 series I speakers - $10

ooooh yeah.

Hey All,
Some of my best finds include the following (BTW they all function):

Marantz 2270 all original with wood cabinet: $100
Sansui G 6700 nice shape: $50
Kenwood KA 5700 nice shape $35
Perreaux PMF 2150B original box/manual: $450
Yamaha NS 1000M all functional: $450
Yamaha M-80 original box/manual: $250
Sansui G 4700 nice shape: $30
Technics SA 5070 nice shape: $35

I know there are more but I cannot remember. :scratch2: I also got my Pioneer HPM 1100's for free in perfect shape from a friend they did not even have a single scratch on them. My favorite score though was the Perreaux PMF 2150B, Yamaha NS 1000M, Yamaha M-80, and the Marantz 2270, all in the same day from the same pawn shop. They had parted out a recording studio and I was the lucky recipient!!! :D

holy schmoly!

My thoughts exactly... Endless hours digging through the bins at the GW liquidation outlet can on those rare occasions seem like something quite different that the usual waste of time. It wasn't even "by the pound" like most everything is...

Bad speaker protection relay and the meter lamps out. I can live with that! :thmbsp:

Some of my better scores, certainly not all and we are just talking thrifts here...

Sansui 990DB- $25
Technics SA-616- $14.96
Fisher RS-1058- (going way way back here but I think it was around $9)
Garrard Zero 100C- $4.98
Marantz Model 30- $6.98
Marantz 5030- $6.98
Kenwood 6160 receiver & Sansui SP-3000 speakers - $50

Oh forget it, there is too much other stuff to list. :)

I just wanted to drop by and tell everyone those thrifts are not empty quite yet, still found some decent stuff this year, and even passed up some of the typical Technics stuff floating around here, and a pair of Advents that needed refoaming for $15 as late as yesterday (no room for speakers and too many other things to work on).

I picked up a MINT Akai AM-2450, for $20.00 from value village.

Akai must have sold alot of stuff in Canada back then - I've found 2 sets of Akai AM-2600 and AT-2600 at the same thrift within 6 months! Nice units, not quite Pioneer but the build quality is actually pretty good. Watch for the lettering - it comes of a bit too easily!

er not thrifts..but may as well have been..

Sansui Z9000-$0 (needed to have the tuner aligned, easy to do if you have the manual)
QED passive control centre (Alps Blue based)-$8
JE Labs open baffles... $35--for plywood, gifted Oxford J12s and some salvaged Seas tweeters, salvaged cross overs..
100' Cat5 cable--$8
Yamaha K600 cassette deck --$10
Yamaha B2 VFET amp, $40 (good cosmetics, it works!)
Garrard Zero100SB-$10 (aluminium plinth)
and a bunch of others..
