Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

... Was listening to The motown classics on my luxman r-117 on klh six speakers with a blu ray player. ... Heard instruments I never heard before.Who said cds are dead?

Not me, I still buy CD's and the rip to ALAC to store on my Mac Mini music server I still use my Denon DCD-1500 too.

Nice simple set up with the Lux & KLH I bet they play well together.

They do play well together. I sometimes switch to my dynaco a50 which the klh six are stacked on top of. Tried hooking them in parallel and sound pretty good too. My wife buys cds. I quite often get mine free or really cheap at garage sales or the library when they weed out old ones.

I did pick up a Sony DSC-RX100 (mk 1) compact digital camera on Saturday. They couldn't test it, as it didn't have a charger. I took a gamble at £30 (it was in a charity shop, so no big deal if it didn't work). It charges via micro USB. Seems to work fine. Very full of features, so I'll need to figure out how they all work.

Sorry I'm late, been busy.

It's a stock commercial export Hamadan from the 1950-1970 period, with one of the standard patterns they used. Although they were hand-woven, they were churned out in great numbers to sell in department stores, using the designs the department-store buyers requested. They are nice medium-grade rugs, but not particularly valuable. Everyone is looking for the traditional tribal designs that they wove for their own use, that's where the real money is.

And the hits keep on coming. Found this grail tonight at a charity shop in Philly. First press with the extra wide deep groove and textured cover. Crazy thing is it sat there for 3 months and hit the 25% off mark. Looks vg+ and after a dip in the ultrasonic, plays nm. Insane what's out there if you look.

That's actually on the lower end at this shop. They generally are pretty expensive. There are records there that are $200+(worth that much, not overpricing). So this was pretty shocking. The store where I got it is the boutique shop where a lot of the really good donations go from the main thrift. I generally spend a bit of money here because the charity work they do is incredible. Also where all my cool donations go lol.

aha that is interesting. So is it worth having professionally cleaned? I was going to keep it as I like the pattern but no point if it's worth nothing

You can clean it your self. That's what my fellow rug digger does. Just ran into him the local dig spot that never has anything anymore......

He probably sold rugs like that when we worked in Bamburger's 37 years ago.

The reason to keep it, and use is because you like it, and it is worth nothing. Well made though.

It's not worth nothing - you could probably sell it on eBay for $200-300, or the equivalent in UK pounds. It's just not a high-value antique. The fringe is intact, the edge binding is solid, the pile seems OK, and there is just a little arbrash in the blue field, so it's a solid piece for what it is. The little irregularities in the width are typical of rugs woven on horizontal looms.
