I got a Marantz CC3000 5-disc changer for $10. It replaced a junk Kenwood changer I was 'using'(allowing to collect dust) It sounds fantastic in comparison. I am really enjoying my CD's now!

I can only partially feel your pain,as I rarely find anything half way worth a darn here in N.Fla!
To have been in Audio Thrift Utopia and then wind up in an Audio Wasteland has got to be very disconcerting and even saddening..
My heartfelt sympathies - honestly!

I'm in the FL panhandle area to and as recent as a couple of years ago, I routinely found decent to nice stuff - Goodwill and most of the other Thrift stores have had NOTHING the past couple of years - I'm just about to the point of never going in them unless I'm driving past one - strange thing is its been months since I've seen anything worthwhile even on Craig's List ! I seem to have my best luck at estate sales and garage sales lately !

my most recent find was.
denon AVR-1000 Missing a knob and some one cut the cord $2.72 . fixed the cord and put a knob from a dead receiver turned it on and it works great .
phase technology pc40 mkiii (never heard of these speakers) in awesome shape $.90 cents for the pair . 2 rear and center kenwood surround sound speakers .35 a piece . all purchased at my local volunteers of america . i found a few other thing that i don't want to admit to .

Its pretty much as you say, the prices have gone up a lot recently on the audio equipment. The big wig from the top makes the employees go to ebay for a guide on prices. Unless something is unknown, it gets marked up. And their are a fair amount of flippers that go there & they are downright nasty. I almost got into it with a guy who was hanging over an amplifier trying to get one of the sales people to get a discount, it wasn't happening. So as soon as the guy went away from the amp, I went over & started checking it out. I was going to check to see if it worked & the guy starts giving me a hard time. Turns out hes a regular & pulls this stuff all the time. But this guy when I picked up the amp starts following me around the store. Im not the kind to start a fight, but he was really getting on my nerves.

The problem with this approach, and I've seen it many time, is that apples and oranges are compared.

Saw a beat up Specialized mtb, maybe worth $80 on a good day marked $500. That's because the eBay comp was a brand new carbon fiber Specialized with asking price of $2K on eBay.

Sony TC-WA9ES Dual Cassete Deck

Found this for $20 at the thrift store today, It looks good, and works well. I think I paid too much.

Moving on

just wanted to take a moment to say goodbye to everyone in this thread. I think I've been following this thread for more than a year! Just about the time I started to find great used electronics at my local GW. Everyone was so helpful in telling me about different items and how they'd perform. But for more than 6 months there hasn't Been much around and no bargains.

As a result, when I go now It's just depressIng, and for some reason the musty smell really gets to me now.

I'll take some time away, and then hit yard sales in the spring and peruse the occasional Craigslisting.

Have really enjoyed talkIng and chattIng wIth all of you, wIll see you around the other threads.

Dave

Went to a couple thrifts today (with no money- why do I do this to myself?)
Found a pair of Original Large Advents... 40 bucks.
Pair of Technics honeycomb speakers in need of refoam (wouldn't buy but pretty cool).
Found two pair of Optimus 77, one Pro. I've been looking for a pair for months!

Nothing in the way of amplification today, but c'mon! The thrift gods were just sticking It to me today.

Oh,talk about the thrift gods sticking it to you - I walked into the GW yesterday and a guy was walking out with an SAE amplifier in perfect condition for $6.99!AAAACCKK!!
And there was other SAE equipment that I missed by 10 minutes.
This place NEVER gets decent equipment!
Oh well..I bought 5 amps at a yard sale yesterday and will post pics as soon as I get them out of the van - and find a place to put them!

Well, I can't tell if your being serious or not... but they go for around $150 on the bay, so I think you'll do just fine...:music:

Sold listings from $40 to $250. What a spread. I wouldn't have expected that kind of money from ANY dual-well cassette deck.

Howrah to the audio gods - they must love me after all!!
Walked into the GW today and the guy who walked out with the SAE amp yesterday had returned it and was walking out.He told me "the volume didn't work".
Well it was actually a preamp, not an amp - and I got it for $6.99 too.I know the guy and he's not up on audio stuff so I'm hoping he didn't know how to hook it up.Wouldn't be the first time I've scored under those conditions.Looks like a nice phono section.

Anyway, here's the amps and an eq I got yesterday. At $310 I paid too much, but it looks like I should be able to almost double my money...eh,ya take the good with the bad right?

And my freak find of the day - a huge Gothic mirror for $40.

Picked up a pair of JBL 4320's in walnut cabs for $200 at an estate sale not too long ago. Needed refoaming of woofers which cost me another $130. Man, these things love horns and pianos being played through them. Now I just have to find a tube amp to make them really perform.
