Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Thank you! I know they are held in high regard, it’ll probably be a little while but this thing will be checked over and serviced before I put it into rotation. I wish they had one of the matching tuners but I’m not complaining lol. They are absolutely gorgeous especially with the circular dial faces, etc. That will be next on my list. About a year ago from this place, and I know the post is in this thread somewhere I came across a very clean Yamaha CR 1020. It was such a beautiful receiver but the sound just wasn’t to my liking. Here soon I am going to start an individual thread on the Scott just to learn more about it, and get some tips and proper care suggestions.
Whatever you do, be EXTREMELY careful cleaning that red cover. They're rare enough as it is, and yours still has the original screenprinting on it. Treat that very well, it's beautiful.

Have replaced what is absolutely necessary...A complete redo would take away some of the magic..Mine had only what was needed and its wonderful sounding. You want to keep some or most of that vintage sound..My handle here and on many audio forums generally is not only a play of a Shakespeare quote (in a way..I also use 2bornot2b) it tells that I go both ways..tube and SS...though I prefer tube

tubeornotube

This is good advice, and sometimes I agree. But as long as you stay in spec, you're not going to lose the vintage sound by replacing all of the electronic components. It's the circuit that matters, and if what you're listening to is the individual electrical components, it's a poorly designed amp. My Fisher 600 with a 100% overhaul on everything except resistors sounds absolutely incredible. On par with my separates. Don't feel bad about replacing 60+ year old bits. If anything, it will make future troubleshooting MUCH easier, since you won't have to try to figure what was and was not replaced.

Smorgasbord today :)

Around $17 per item. Grand total was $140.
Had some other odds and ends: Sennheiser, Skullcandy headphones, and four sets of ProFlex rca connectors.
These were all bought untested and likely have issues. It's a crapshoot, but I consider this my hobby, and hobbies can cost money. :)

That Sunfire, even if it needs work, should be a great piece. I have their Cinema Grand, and love it to death. Good luck tracking down an original volume knob(they were flush with the chassis).

I went shopping in my local Deseret Industries thrift store yesterday (after leaving the liquor store next door) and was blown away by a fifty-pound YAMAHA RX-V3300 in excellent condition, and a pair of Paradigm MINI MONITOR v.3 speakers. It was all in like-new condition! $175.00 later the YAMAHA can't physically fit where my current marantz SR 5006 receiver is entertaining me. Based on what I've read here on ak thus far the RX-V3300 will be an audio upgrade from my marantz.

I don't know if it really sold for that but one just sold for $50 needing service on that auction site, another one sold for 1k working.

It's good he can service them if need be.

Unusual place to pull this stuff, but that is a sky high place to live like Cali so it's not surprising. And it isn't a thrift. Especially GW. A lot of GW's in the Pacific Northwest were some of the first stores to start selling online in the mid 00's.

You should be finding this kind of stuff in Jewsey. But they are pullin' it.........

I wonder what the Law Suit Status is in places like Washington. If somebody stubbed their toe in Maryland they would try to sue. Killed a lot of things. Not unique to here......

Passed on a pair of Polk RTI A1's for $50 in Cherry. Meh, could have got them for $40 with a coupon but don't need anymore slow flips......

And they were gone today.....I hope who ever bought them needed them.

I've tried to work my way into the recycling centers around here, but they are all instant no, due to lawsuits I guess. Which sucks, because I would love to search them.

That, and are they privately owned. They may pay the state a fee, and they make money by the ton.

What Highping is dealing with is unusual. No way is state/private. It's all private.

Yeah, it's private, sometimes I feel like I'm working there. I sort through gaylords after they've held events or have gone on "pick ups". I take computer orientated items to the techs and stereo stuff to another area if I don't want it.
Last cool stuff I found that I didn't want was 7 "test" units for PS3's from a company that ran diagnostics on them. The techs got pretty excited about them. :)

Highping is the guy giving the hard no. Not that I know him to do this but he has his gig set up and it is working well for him. He doesn't want anyone moving in on his turf. There is probably a highping in many of the electronics recycling places around the country. It does sound like he is doing a service for the company by sorting and thinning the piles a bit along the way, paying for what he decides to keep.

same here also in NJ. They say it's a law you can't take stuff from recycle center. used to be friendly with the guys who let me take stuff years ago. Saw a sunfire subwoofer, flat screen tvs, high amps that I couldn't touch. I can only window shop.

Axel is in New Jersey, at least that's his given location. I am in Maryland. I don't think I am going 3K Miles to take Pings stuff.
Axel might. Gotta ask him.

The hard no? :dunno:
