Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Yes, good work! There are fewer thrift store finds here because the health and safety laws make it very difficult for charity shops to sell electrical goods.

Brings a tear to my eye thinking how many quality & often easily repairable items go to landfill... Even the rubbish dumps/recycling centers aren't allowed to sell stuff anymore!

In the UK the "Kenwood" trade name was taken by a food mixer company, so they used Trio.

I should have read more on this company. From wikipedia:

The brand recognition of Kenwood would surpass that of Trio's, and in 1981, Trio decided on using the Kenwood name worldwide and renamed itself Kenwood Corporation in 1986.

I'm willing to bet that this unit is much older than 1986.:D

Ironies

One of the ironies of life is that goodwill rhymes with landfill.
Cool.

Goodwill today show your goodwill card and you get a scratch off, mine was for 20% off. Today there were some choices. Harmon Kardon receiver avr203 49.99 and a matching hk DVD 101 for 9.99, but I didn't buy that saw a Nakamichi cd player MB2s 24.99, could not get it to work. So I bought the other Nakamichi Cd Player2 for 19.99 with my 20% off 16.99.
They were going to toss it because they could not get the tray to open, so I flipped it over and switch the lock to free...works perfect... Needs a remote but it does sound quite nice.

Indeed, bargains are hard to come by over here. You get dreamers asking 200% more than somethings worth on eBay & everyone thinks theirs are worth that much too :thumbsdn:

Just makes it sweeter when you do find one !

We get that here too. Last summer some fool paid $180k at a Barrett Jackson for a VW Samba van. That's $198,000 for a 21 window bus. Now everybody thinks there beat-up rust bucket bus is worth $30k.

I would love to have a selection like that at my thrift !!!!

This week's additions:

Polk Monitor 7-B's, fully functional and near mint, $9.99:

Sony STR V-5, Excellent condition, but was filthy inside. Cleaned up great and sounds even better :music:: $20

I got a set of those Polks for a buck less than you a few years ago, great speakers, do yours have the "Peerless " tweeters ?

I do believe those are the Peerless tweets in the pic he provided. Nice speakers!!! and congrats to both of you for scoring them for such low prices.

I got those polk's without drivers but with that radiator for free few months ago, and gave em away to a friend cos he had a polk set that had the same drivers but no radiator and it had a split cabinet.
Swap em and boom boom away.

So far I have bought a Yamaha CR640 in great condition... A Yamaha KX400U dual cassette deck,

My all time great find was a set of EPI speakers. I didn't know what they were at the time. I did see they had electrostatic tweeters. Floor models. Picked em up refoamed em. Stat 450's. I paid about $20. I saw a pair on for sale online at $650 Without the grills. These speakers are beyond unbelievable.

Running a Sansui S-X700, Pioneer PL 50 with a Stanton 881EE and the Stat's. Every album is another adventure.

Pioneer SX-424

Paid $20 :)

I didn't buy either of these things but I recently saw a Sansui CD-V350 CD player at one Goodwill (I believe they wanted about $30) and a Yamaha T-300 analog tuner at another Goodwill. I have yet to make it to the Salvation Army here in town.

Radio Shack Optimus 5

Yesterday I took a chance, At my local Kiwanis thrift store Here in Cape Coral FL there sat 2 Realistic Optimus 5's in very good condition, found a butter knife and pried off the grills, Yes excellent! Loved the looks of those speakers. No I never ever considered Realistic a real speaker. Marked $8 each I offered $6 per. At home I hooked 'em up to the old Sansui and hit the switch. Wow did they sound great? better than my Sansui or Advent speakers. A little Old English on the cabinets and they are now a fine addition to my stereo system. Optimus 5 these are real sleepers.
