Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Went to the recyclers today, and all I could find was a pair of speakers for $10. :D

Spent all day working on them because someone thought it would be cool to slice each driver with a box knife!!!!!! :thumbsdn: Oh, the humanity!!!! :tears:

Oh, yeh, they're JBL Century L100's. :)

Sitting at a wedding and my wife's co-worker says (with nose wrinkled), "So, what do you BUY at rummage sales?"
My wife says "I look for jewelery, my husband looks for stereo equipment, records, etc."

Co-workers boyfriend says "I have like 300 of my grandfather's albums. Beatles, Elvis, all kinds of stuff-some of still in original wrappers, plus a record player and speakers. Do you want 'em?"

Looking forward to helping them clear some "junk" out of their house...

And I'm sure you'll be very efficient & thorough. If you weren't having a good time at the wedding up til then...I'll wager the rest of the evening was just peachy.

Garage sale cassettepalooza

Stopped at a garage sale Saturday...there were maybe a couple dozen LPs and a LOT of cassettes. I went through 'em all:

Pre-recorded:
Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble...."Texas Flood"
SRV again......................................."Couldn't Stand The Weather"
Bob Marley..."20 Greatest Hits" On "Black Tulip" records. In verrrrrry fine print: "Made In Holland"
Robert Plant..."Shaken 'N Stirred"
Eagles..."Hell Freezes Over"
Sade..."Promise"
Tangerine Dream...Turn Of The Tides"
Neil Young..."Landing On The Water"
Robert Palmer..."Heavy Nova"
Bonnie Raitt..."Longing In Their Hearts"
No time like August to buy Christmas music:
"Jazz To The World" On Blue Note
And...the bummer of 'em all:
Little Feat..."Waiting For Columbus" MFSL Original Master HighFidelity cassette. Only one of a two-tape set. Sides 3 & 4. There had to be over 100 tapes and I went through EVERY other tape looking for a misfile...asked the guy running the sale...he couldn't help because he was selling them for someone else. Even called the owner...who called back & had no clue where the other tape might be:(
Oh, well...the other tape might turn up some day. The one I got sounds incredible.

Recorded blanks:
3 Scotch XS-II C-90s
9 Maxell XL-II C-90s. 3 vintages...the older style with the clear oval, the somewhat-newer all-gray style, and a few with the Maxell poster guy printed on the shell.
2 Maxell XL-II-S C-90s
2 Maxell XL-II-S C-100s
1 TDK SA-X C-100

I may keep a number of these as they are...since they're well-recorded and I don't have some of the artists. For example, I have zero Tower Of Power in any format in my collection...now I have "Bump City", "Urban Renewal" & "Back To Oakland"...so that's cool.

And...out of the Firestone Christmas/Robert Goulet/etc. LP selections:

Gerry Mulligan Quartet..."Paris Concert" World Pacific, 1957. Recorded 6/1/54 at the Salle Pleyel during the 3RD Paris Jazz Festival. Mulligan, Bob Brookmeyer, Red Mitchell & Frank Isola. Other than a split on the bottom of the jacket, in incredible condition & plays like a dream.

Cassettes were a dime each, the LP a quarter...so I blew $3.15.

This is the kind of stuff I like to find, you just don't see much at all anymore.
$2.92

Aiwa AD-6800
Found it at the local GW for $15. It was plugged in and was tested by someone. Guess they didn't buy it due to it not spinning the tape freely. Picked it up and it felt...heavy. Built like a tank and the schematics on top is way cool.
Only thing it needs are new belts (on order). Looks like it has been worked on before as some of the wires inside has fresh solder joints.

Adcom dreams....

ok so it been easily 6-8 months since the last real scroe(pair of ADS 880's for $7.99 + tax) and having been reading this thread consistantly, I was starting to beleive that all the decent electronics from GW and SA always ended up online as witnessed by most AK'ers....

Also had been thinking over the last couple of months... go big monster receiver or upgrade my separates (Hafler 9270 amp, Adcom GFP 555II preamp and a Denon TU 660 tuner) or both.... So this past thursday while moving my daughter back to colllege, i poke into the GW i hadn't been in since May and walking by the small electronics(clock radio, hair dryers etc) I see a black box w/ a bunch of buttons I figured it was a misplaced Black Plastic Crap piece of equipment... but I had to at least look at the brand...turns out its an ADCOM GTP 450 integrated tuner... sweet!!! I'm thinking how did this unit not end up at GW online auction, plus the price...$12.99...mint shape and yes... sold!! Take it and stuff it in my trunk.
The next day after getting my daughter settled in, I decide to try my luck at the local SA... and the very first item on the shelf, next to the back doors is an ADCOM GFA 535 amp!!! holy crap, mint shape and its got a price tag of $12.00 even and I pick it up and go pay and sure enough, its 50% off friday...$6.00 plus tax......
2 separate days, 2 different thrifts and 2 pretty nice complementary separates for a whopping total of $18.99 plus tax...its like one of the AK'ers said, gotta visit the shops regularly and consistantly... gotta be present to win...

now before I start playing around and taking them apart....anything I should be wary of??? I did notice that the GTP 450 does NOT have a phono stage... what the heck?!?!? Anyone know what year the GTP came out? I'm pretty sure the GFA 535 is a late 80's-1991 unit, just at the time I got my GFP 55II i couldn't quite afford the GFA 555II and didn't need the 200 watts and my audio store had a killer sale on the Haflers.... thanks for any info on these units....

Picked up some nice vinyl on my rounds today.

Sealed private pressed folk LP by Charlie King titled Old Dreams and New Nightmares about the political climate in the early 70s here in the States.

Nice Funk LP by Johnny Hammond called Gambler's Life.

Rare 12" single by the New Wave group, The Associates, with 7 mixes of Fire to Ice. Also has a nice picture sleeve.

Progressive Rock group Spindrift on the small Steady Label doing the rock treatment to Pirates of Penzance.

Later issued Blue Note with Sidney DeParis and James P. Johnson, volume II.

Early Vox pressing of Peter and the Wolf with Brandon DeWilde narrating (the kid from the Western, Shane with Alan Ladd).

World's Fair Suite by the World's Fair Symphony Orchestra-shaded nipper stereo in shrink.

Project 3/ Popular Science Monthly joint effort stereo test record.

RCA LOP 1010 pressing of the Radio City Music Hall Christmas LP with the Rockettes on the front.

There were also some bins of celebrity photos taken from 50s movie magazines and put in plastic sleeves (somebody's collection). I found a great illustration of Jane Russell from the Howard Hughes movie, The Outlaw for $1.99. Walked over to the GW frame section and found a half priced frame for 50 cents.

Another day, another recycle place, and .........another pair of jbls! :D
Worked on the cabs all day. They had angle iron screwed into the tops and bottoms.....twice - 12 holes to fill. :D
The woofers are both 116H's, one had been sent in for a recone, and the other is a later version 116H-2.

Oops, almost forgot, they are JBL 4301B's. :)

Haven't seen much of anything in the Electrical section of the local GW's the past few months, just crappy DVD multi-disc players and clock radios.

Asked one of the worker bees today, "what happened to the good stuff"? "We have to put it on the web site now", sez he. "You mean they make you identify all the good stuff and put in in a separate location?", I asked. "Yup", he replied.

Sure enough: http://www.goodwillsacto.org/shop-online/

:tears: Ah, well, this store hasn't, so far, started putting absurd prices on LPs. I did score a nice Columbia Sportswear Hawaiian shirt for $4.99.

Not surprised.I know if you go to shopgoodwill.com,you can search for auctions by city or state. For some reason,New Mexico is not there.I'm going to ask when I go again what they do with their good stuff, because they really began sorting through the stuff heavily in July, when they retooled.Maybe they are hoarding the good stuff ,to set aside to sell elsewhere.

I found this here

Why are your prices so high?

Our prices are competitive with the demand. We establish prices by surveying the market. While we occasionally make a mistake, we try to make sure we are selling excellent quality merchandise for a price lower than new low-quality merchandise. In addition, our supply of goods for sale depends on our donors who expect that we value their donations properly and are committed to maximizing the impact of their generosity. To ensure a continuous flow of quality donations, we cannot allow our prices to become too low. Many of our donors would become discouraged and complain if we sold their quality donations at extremely low prices. Finally, the money we earn in our retail operations helps fund our vocational services. The more we can earn, the more lives we can improve through job training and placement.

Well no more matched pairs of Scott tube gear for $35 or VG++ copies of The Chirping Crickets on Brunswick at 40 cents a pound for me.Dang.

Technics SL-QD22

Today, GW-$8
Has a p-mount Grado GF1, which is the legacy version of the current Grado Silver cart.

Hey, sounds good! :)

Oh, the Sansui receiver the TT is sitting on is a 350A that I got a month ago for $25. Works great!

You know what else sucks,is that we used to have this huge flea market every weekend at the NM State Fair Grounds. It had been going on since the early 70s.Can't begin to tell you all the boxloads of rare vinyl I bought there, including most of my sizeable collection of 60s garage 45s.The real goods like on Pebbles or Back From The Grave.Anyway,in 2011,they cut off a whole section of it,and then more. Then last year, they started building a brand new casino. Now there are a dozen or less booths, with all brand new merchandise, and talk is they will be chased out after the State Fair next month.

Found a new thrift store by my house, came home with:

Denon DCD 520

Pink Floyd - Wish you were here 1994 remaster CD (really rocks on the new Denon)
Wings - Wings over America LP
Journey - Escape LP
Al Stewart - Al Stewart Live LP

They also had a full Chicago vinyl set including a box set in OK condition if anyone is interested I'll pick it up for them.

I've been quiet this weekend, as I took the woman and boys camping. However, I promptly bought ten pairs of JBL e110 drivers, a pair of JBL e130's, and an Ashly 1001 active crossover for $400. Judging by eBay, it should've cost me over a grand for that haul!
