Gorillas & Stereos

Last night, I was watching a wonderful documentary about Gorillas, narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Fascinating stuff covering a few generations and personalities of the same clan: alpha male silverbacks, infant primates, aggression, affection, competition, communication, play, murder, outcasts, environmental conditions, and familial bonds.

Gorillas are a lot like people. Or maybe people are a lot like Gorillas. IDK. But one thing I noticed is that Gorillas don’t have stereos. That’s right!—no turntables or streamers or CDPs. Gorillas don’t appear to obsess over soundstages or cartridges or bit rates or compression or sweet spots or DD vs. belt drive or tubes vs. SS.

Odd creatures—right?

Maybe it’s because they’re offline and don’t have access to Amazon? Maybe they’re content without a subscription to TAS? (I doubt it.) But IDK. Not one of them seemed to own a copy of Robert Harley’s “The Complete Guide to High-End Audio.” Go figure.

Got me thinking: Do I really need a stereo? I guess I could monkey around well enough without one. Eventually, I’ll have to come to terms with the fact that stereos, like everything else, are temporary distractions (it’s not like I’m an ancient Egyptian with a pyramid to line with bass traps). And I doubt that my Klipschorns and tube amps will accompany me into whatever state-sponsored dementia- or memory- or mental-ward will no doubt eventually house me.

Thoughts? Anyway, it’s “A Gorilla Story” on Netflix. Highly recommended.

I'm pretty sure my wife watched the same documentary just the other day.
Was that the one where Attenborough revisited an expedition -when he was MUCH younger- and one of the juvenile gorillas decided to lay on top of him?

All of the great apes are amazing and it is quite sad to see their numbers dwindling.

Yes. It’s interesting, at times frightening, and extremely valuable to see how close—in our affections and familial and tribal bonds and also our power grabs petty cruelties—we are to gorillas. Or vice versa.

Koko lived about a quarter mile from my house. I would often ride my bike past where she lived. You could see the upper part of a very large outdoor gorilla cage from the road and once in a great while you could see glimpses of gorilla activity but I never heard a stereo playing there.
