Got first dibs on an estate sale, 150 items+, any hidden gems?

Hey AK, I recently got in contact with a guy who's dad recently passed, leaving an almost horded amount of electronics that are all for sale. I have no idea what is desirable and potentially worth something and was wondering if you guys could help me out.

I didn't see anything that jumped out as uber collectible, but the following are what strike me as worth looking at and buying if they are working and can be had for a reasonable price:

That Hallicrafters S-38B if its in decent shape & working might be nice...Pretty basic, "Boys' First Radio" type. But it got a LOT of boys interested in SWL & Ham radio in the late '40s/early '50s...

Without doing any research or thinking hard about it, a few things that stand out to me:

thats a $*%^ load of stuff, lol.

I haven't bought any of it yet, its offered to me as stuff that's first come, first serve.

Are you saying nobody can buy any of it until you've made your selections first? That is a huge pile of gear. I'd like to see a photo of the space it's stored in!!

Good luck, Frank!

sometimes estate sales are set up weeks in advance before the actual sale, maybe he has a deadline to make his decision

For the record, I was only shining some light on some potentially valuable or otherwise worthwhile gear that the list contained.

The Infinity QBs are nice speakers, worth getting.

The Adcom speaker selector is a nice thing to have if you are getting into audio and may want more than one pair of speakers. The Adcom is a particularly nice speaker selector, one at or near the top of my list for that product type. Grab it.

The Soundcraftsmen EQ is good (for an EQ). You may need to use ProLube or similar to clean the sliders, but it's worth picking up if you plan to use (or just to play with and learn about) an EQ.

A power conditioner can be a good thing to have, but it depends on the model. Small, cheap home-use ones usually aren't that good for hi-fi, but a decent "industrial" one can be excellent. Check it out, and consider getting it, if you don't already have something similar for your audio power supply.

I'll echo what was already said about the Hallicrafter's radio.

The Kenwood C2 preamp is a nice preamp, not always easy to find. Unless you already have a really nice high-end preamp, I'd consider getting it.

The Tascam 22-2 reel-to-reel deck is a very decent tape deck, if you want to experiment with reel-to-reel. There are better ones out there, but they're usually more expensive, and the Tascam is a good, generally reliable unit.

The Sansui QRX-6500 is not the ultimate quad gear, but it's pretty decent, and a good way to "get your feet wet" with quadraphonic stuff, if you are interested in that. You could enjoy it for a while, and if you get "hooked" then look to upgrade; the better/best units are much more expensive.

For a lot of the other gear on the list, I'd have to see it to make a decision. In some cases, I know the brands made both excellent and cheap-o gear, and can't tell from the model numbers given (without time-consuming research) which category they're in. Celestion and JVC, for example, are in that group. The above-mentioned items just popped out on the first reading of the list, for me, based on the gear I've had experience with. Some of the others might be very good, too, but I just don't happen to recognize the model numbers. Pics would be very useful.

With some care, you could probably put together a quite decent system from among what's on that list, but there is also a fair amount of what appears to be mid-fi stuff. A fun shopping expedition, perhaps, but not the ultimate motherload.

Good luck, have fun, enjoy whatever you get and don't regret anything you pass up on.

The NAD 3020 and JBL 4612s are both on the essential list. Arkay knows his Infinitys, so throw those on as well. The Klipsch pros and HI speakers might be good. HI in most situations is Heresy Industrial.

The trick is getting one or two of what you need, and not what you want.:scratch2:

Wow, I can't believe one person had all that gear! It must be one hell of an estate just to hold all that!
