Got me some Altec 886 A. Now where do I sit!!

OK.. with all that said, I would like to see what my Altecs would sound like replacing my 902 driven 511a with a waveguide... At times, I do feel like I'm missing a little something at the very top end, but then at times I wonder if some of what is so appealing about those horns to me would be worth losing to gain some more top end...

I'd like to experiment some myself, but I just don't have the cash to be throwing around like that for something I might, or might not like..

Why? Because we can. Also because it is really fun and rewarding to create something unique, of which there are only a handful in the world.

Happy medium? Nope, it's just not possible for me. I've heard how amazing these cabinets can sound and I would never be satisfied with their flat-out aural mediocrity coupled with high resale value in stock form.

I've chosen to tear into my C36s because I know how truly great they can be. If anything I'll keep my eyes peeled for a spare pair to A/B or hoard for later modification. :thmbsp:
 
Just seems like it would be so much easier to build a new box, than destroy something so nice and higly sought after... I do know SOME of the C36 boxes the front baffle can be removed and replaced. Mine I can't.. If I could remove and replace it, maybe I would consider it myself, but these are getting to be so few and far apart finding them.. too many others have destroyed so many pairs just looking to get the value of the parts inside.. because of that, the boxes their selves are starting to take a nice jump in price...

Sorry ya'll.. I just can't understand taking something nice apart to make something more.. or less... Just like the console people can't understand aparting out hard to find consoles just because you don't have room for the whole box.. or the TV people that can't see scrapping out cool old TV's..
 
What you're not grasping is that we're getting vastly improved performance while retaining the cool vintage looks. THAT's the happy medium.

Go back and look again at Duffinator's DIY JBLs. I don't believe anybody who's heard them thinks they're anything less than top tier.

Find yourself a pair of empty C36s, and watch what Wiredbecker and Duff's friend Coy are doing with them.

I'm certain, somewhere, there's an annual convention of B/W TV enthusiasts.... :yes:
 
I do understand Simi. At this point I would like to make the Atlecs better without tearing them up. I don't buy speakers for value but for the music they produce. The tweets on the Altecs were not very impressive to me. But I don't plan on cutting them upeither even though I spent very little for them. Heck I have an orphaned Smaller Advent that I don't want to tear up. I just can't do it. But always looking for better sound :) I want to clean up the cabs on the Altecs and see where I'm at with a recap. Its a project for sure and they look very nice.
 
The other beauty of the EWG is that it can be done very modularly. Make a tweeter enclosure and add tot he top, disconnect the original tweeter (just the leads) and make bypass the original crossover. No hacking needed. :)

A5s with multicell horns, I would agree. I wouldn't be listening to them much, however.

Valencias and A7s, you know the answer, and a bunch of other AKers now agree, apparently: BMS.... :yes:

I was careful to make a distinction between the A7 and A7-500. The latter dubbed the magnificent is one of the most collectible vintage speakers. A7s, go ahead and tear em up, there are more of them then flintstone kids.

Wiredbecker and I stuck an E'wave in the prefinished PE 14" curved cab I used for Indignias.

Mounted horizontal, it was WAY cool lookin'. :banana:
