Got the HK Three Thirty today, Pretty Thang

Do you know where I might find a wood cover for my thrift store special 330? :scratch2:

Mike, you will pretty well have to count on some good luck either at the thrifts, yard sales, or eBay.

Sometimes you see a unit on eBay, nice physical condition, but with issues performace wise. They can go for a low price. I have seen a defective 630 with wood case go for $10. Had I won the auction, I would have asked the seller to ship the case and knobs and trash the 630.

Do not let the fact that you paid little for the receiver cloud your decision to pay the same or slightly more for the case than your outlay so far. In many cases, the little things can cost more than the main unit.

Good luck.

Joe

As has been previously stated, the 930 or 730 are the premier models of the "X30" line. The 930 sounds a bit more tube like than the 730 IMHO, but for overall listening enjoyment of the two, the 730 is my preference. The 730 has all the features of the 930 save a few rarely used options, like seperate L&R bass/treble controls.

If you really want to get a true sleeper, go for the Citation Receiver. :thmbsp: I am on my second one now and would use it more if I had addtional space on the stand. The thing is huge and heavy, but oh so sweet sounding.

Cheers,
Joe

Joe,

What is your take on the sound of HK 900+ compared to the 730 or 430? Which tuner do you prefer between the 730 and 900+? Thanks.

tcdriver, at this time I can not honestly answer that question as I have never compared them.

900+ and 730

Joe,

Thanks for your reply. I have a 900+ and it looks to be about the same era and with the same styling as the x30 series. Since you and others praise the 430 and 730 so much, I was curious as to whether the 900+ had the same sonic virtues. Have you ever set up your 900+ in a quadraphonic system?

I think I might replace the output caps, and the power cap. I suppose these will be the largest electrolytic caps in there?

VN, normally the PS caps are the largest ones. If you have a digital volt meter, set the meter to AC volts and measure for any AC voltage on the DC rails. If there is next to no AC voltage present, the PS caps are ok. Presence of AC voltage (ripple) on the DC rail indicates a lack of filtering by the caps.

Good luck.

Joe
