gotta find some good rock speakers

Hey all.I'm hunting for a set of speaks that will sound good for rock.I've got a local man that wants to show me some a/d/s speakers and some advents as well.because I'm directly between nashville and chattanooga it kinda hinders me from going that far.just because id rather not travel really.I've looked for a set of realistic mach ones.I found a prestine set but the guy will not drop his asking price from 175 for the pair.I remember hearing a pair of the mach ones years ago and always wanted a set.Anyone know how the advents and ads would stack up to the mach ones.my marantz 4270 could kill my fisher st512s if I cranked it up loud.any rockers out there with some info?I mainly listen to rock from the early 60s to the mid 90s.thanks

The Mach One's rock great. Not so much with jazz or classical. The Advents do rock well, but I don't find them to as great for rock as the Mach One's. I have some Stacked Advents, so that does rock pretty good :) But, you are right to hold off on those Mach One's as I think thats a little too much.

Thanks man ill just have to hold out a while.this local guy wants me to come check out his advent loud speakers.he says they have 10 inch drivers.I just wonder if they will pack a punch like the 12s I have in my current set.

The ADS are extremely accurate nice speakers maybe not as loud as Mach Is, but MUCH closer to the original master tape in sound IMO, and actually not bad bass at all if you give them some juice.

Thanks barredowl.I'm gonna give a listen to some advents and ads from this gentlemen.I hope I'm not disapointed.although id still love to have a set of machones.

I'm not sure I will find out what he has on Friday or Saturday.he says he has several sets of advents and ads speakers.I can post with what he has when I find out for sure.

If you want an in-expensive rock speaker the Infinity SM 150 or 120's are OK for that duty. I would go with the Mach 1's first and then put the "Video Lady" modification to them!
The Infinity 150's can be found for under $100 usually- refoam & recap them and they will do fine. Later on you can modify the cab into an Econowave project!

I did find a set of mint mach ones but am under the assumption that the 175 price is a bit much for them.even tho id love to have a set.ill keep the video lady mod on the table to if I find a set for the right money thanks for the info dc270

everyone's ears are different. Personally I think the Mach's sound like a $25 speaker and then I'd only buy them for that to resell to those that think they're worth more. That being said another speaker to be on the lookout for are cerwin vega d-9's I find them a lot more refined than the machs also the 15" woofer in it is better suited to the large cabinet than the Mach's they can easily be found in that $100 to $150 price range though you may have to drive to a bigger metro area like nashville or chattanooga to find them also bring a truck if you do as they're the size of a small refrigerator

For loud rock I think Cerwin Vegas can't be beat for the price. Not really accurate, but rock n rollin!

A vintage set of JBL studio monitors also would rock, and probably be all around a nicer find.
I have a set of Jensen 24's refoamed and recapped when I want to rock. Only needs 30 watts to crank them up , just like Cerwin Vegas.

Now if you could only find some Genesis II speakers....

Have fun on your speaker hunt.

My opinion only.

Really not sure what you're actually doing, but really like my set up. VMPS Super Tower/R 96 db's, driven by 600 watts rms/channel. Led Zeppelin on this set up sure sounds good to me. All other kinds of music too. My friends seem to agree, as always showing up with an arm full of CD's.

Since you already have Marantz gear, look into the Marantz HD-770, HD-880 or similar DS series. Just make sure you get a pair with original woofers.

Look for some MtRs or Grafyx 8 or 10. You see these from time to time in the midwest and they are solid, heavy boxes of fun. High quality, not MTX or Cerwin Vega junk.

There's monster pair of MtRs for $200 on Columbus, OH Craigslist right now. They weigh 100 lbs.each.

Thanks kbot cguts renzor grey and jschatz.ill do some home work to see what I can come up with.I don't really know where all the good gear is hiding in tn.I live on cl and find tons of 30 dollar throw aways like the speakers I have.infact I offered to give away the stv890s to a guy the other day.lol.well needless to say I still have them.I guess they will be on the first bon fire this fall.lol.the st 512 s I have were the first set of speakers I got back in highschool so they stay.but man I need a good upgrade.like I said earlier my 4270 can blow them things apaart if I let it rip.not to mention the quality of sound is not there either

Joebeadg I have no clue on the mod a member recomended it on the mach ones.I was gonna reasearch that later.haven't done it yet tho.lol.
