Grace 9 series compliance #

Hello,

Does anyone happen to know if the listed 12 is accurate for Grace cart
compliance number?I ask because I read that you are supposed to multiply this number by 1.5 for Japan carts? That would make it 18.Was wondering if the 12 is accurate or the 18?I entered my tonearm mass of 16 grams plus the weight of the cartridge of 6 grams.Total mass of 22 grams and compliance
of 12 gives me 9.8 Resonance Frequency.Right in the middle of the suggested 8-12 Hz number. If I use 18 the Resonance Frequency would be 8 Hz.I have a Grace F9L cart and 12 inch Micro Seiki tonearm.I understand that MFG's numbers can be wrong but it is all I have. Was just curious if the 12 or 18 would be more accuate for measurement purpouses.Or stated another way are the Grace carts better suited for a medium mass arm as opposed to a light arm?

Hi scottyh777,

The reproduction of the Grace owners manual on VE says that the compliance of the F-9L is 14X10E-6 cm/dyne (highest of the F-9 series), but no mention of the frequency used to rate it. My bet is that the dynamic compliance is in the low to mid 20 range at 10Hz. However, in my experience, the suspension almost always has stiffened a bit on these old styli, so it is hard to say what your example actually is. Best just try it and see, but if you want to measure it, use the resonance tracks on the HiFi News test record (which John Elison measured to be inaccurate by ~5-10% too high).

BTW, nailer, the Grace owners manual states that they used a Grace G-945 tonearm for their specs, which is somewhat heavier than the 707.

I should point out that my stylus was re-tipped by soundsmith using level 3 as described below.

If you desire this "Optimized Contour" contact line diamond" level of rebuild, we will automatically proceed with the superior Ruby assembly unless we find a technical reason that the Ruby cantilever cannot be installed. If that is the case, we will install an aluminum alloy cantilever (as was likely originally installed in your cartridge) with the Optimized Contour Nude Contact Line Diamond.

I hadn't heard that 1.5 factor for Grace carts before. Where did you hear that? I'm running an F9E on a 707 ll and it's a perfect match. Friday I rec'd my Soundsmith Ruby OCL stylus for it and was able to listen to 3 records Friday night. Awesome. Yesterday I stripped the room to the walls for paint and closet removal. I need to get up there and sand some drywall so I can move my system back in soon.

IF a cart's dynamic compliance was spec'd at 100Hz (many Japanese carts such as AT were/are), multiplying this compliance rating by 1.5 gives a rough approximation of its dynamic compliance at 10Hz, which is what the rest of the world uses (apples to apples).

Don't know for sure that this is the case for the GRACE, but Michael-Otto's post above seems to indicate it is so.
