Grado F3+ Cart

I recently purchased a used Hitachi PS 38 turntable. Owner said the stylus was broken but had a NIB AT92E Universal replacement cart for it.

I was going to replace the cart and when I looked closer at the existing cart saw that it is a Grado F3+. I am new when it comes to turntables but recognize the Grado name for carts. The wires are soldered to the connectors.

Should I be looking for a replacement stylus for the Grado as opposed to replacing it with the AT? Can anyone tell me what Grado styli I should be looking for?

any of the prestige line of grado styli will fit. As noted, the best dollar value in sound is had with the 8MZ stylus.
 
I'm sorry to butt in here but I have what seems on the surface to be a related question. And I've been meaning to ask someone (read marcmorin :) ) this question for a while. Am I correct in believing that my FC+ is in fact not related -to the F3+- and no current styli will fit?

That's the same cart that came with my son's TT we got him over the summer. It too has a broken stylus. I checked online at the place in the Netherlands where I've ordered from before, and they recommend a Grado Blue, Red, or 8MZ as a direct replacement. I have yet to order, so as far as sound quality...??

I took Frosten and Morin's advice and the 8MZ is a great fit absolutely no regrets.

Come to think of it, the Grado's what came on my YP-701, not my son's P-20. His had an AT95. Too many TTs and carts and styli and stuff to keep track of. LOL

Looks like I need to check with the banker and see which Grado stylus I can afford. :D

Here's where its a little confusing.....there was an FT, FC, FTE, FCE when the original "F" series was introduced. Then the "F" series was changed. to the FTE+1, FCE+1....etc. The current production Grado styli will not fit into the early series. if you can pull your stylus and post a photo of it, we can see which "FC" model it is.

That's what i wanted to see. Nope, that's the "old" design. The prestige line wont fit without taking it to a grinding wheel. Not sure how long Grado kept production of that series, but the current shaped "prestige" series stylus assemblies started about 1974.

My "old design" FC+ has a date code from 1978.

Thank you so much for the clarification. Now I finally know I don't need to keep hanging on to this thing. It came on my Yamaha P-750 that I got in late 1981 or early '82. I replaced it a year or so ago with a Green1.
