Granny’s Cocoa Cream Pie

Here is a great old hard to find recipe. It’s simple and tasty. This really was a simple desert often used during the 30’s and 40’s.

½ c. cocoa

¼ cup cornstarch/or arrowroot powder (or ½ c. all purpose flour)

3 egg yolks

1 ½ c. sugar

¼ tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

2 c. milk

Mix cocoa, cornstarch or flour, beaten egg yolks, sugar, salt, and vanilla, then add milk gradually, while stirring in a pot over med-high heat. Cook until thick, stirring and scraping it smooth. Cream pies take some time to thicken, so stir... and scrape... and stir... (10-12 min). Using a heavy bottom pan really helps. Just keep on stirring and scraping the bottom until it thickens. Pour into a pre-baked pie shell. Put in the fridge to chill, add whipped cream if you like, or whip the leftover egg whites for a meringue topping!

I remember making those when I was a kid. Ironic, I'm sitting here eating a slice of home made blueberry pie now. I'm down to only enuf blueberries to make 4 more deep dish blueberry pies. Then I will have to wait to next year again.

That sounds pretty darn good, in a simple way. Anything with a hearty dose of real cocoa in it kicks the ever-lining crap out of anything from a box. I'm pretty sure most pre-packaged chocolate baking products have very little cocoa in them.
