Shhhhhhhhh! Don't tell anybody but there are a bunch of them hidden inside of these things too. All that you need is a couple of table knives to wiggle 'em out.

Really though, 9 volt batteries have 6 smaller batteries in them that will work as AAA batteries. The flat ends of them are positive and the ends with the little bump are negative, the reverse of standard batteries. They'll still work though.
 
All common batteries are 1.5V so if you have a 6V camera battery (non rechargeable) it is made up of 1.5V cells.

A car battery is made of 2 volt cells strapped together. 6 volt batteries used to have external strapping and some could even be split a part into 3 2Volt cells.
