Green Day's new album: 21st Century Breakdown

Was not a fan but when I first heard some of American Idiot, I picked it up and was somewhat surprised that I enjoyed most of it. Waiting to hear some of the new one.

I agree with the political comments in this thread, but I wanted to add that Green Day seems to be attempting to bring back the "album" concept again. This is a good thing. The concept of CDs containing a few singles and all the rest being filler is getting old.
 
Watched Green Day on SNL last night. Liked the songs and their performance - old school rock, nothing fancy. Plan to pick up the new CD at Target later today.

Picked it up at Target this afternoon for 10 bucks on sale.

So far I also like it a lot. I had to listen to American Idiot about three times before I really started to like it and expect the same with this one.

Played it on my best CD setup that includes my Allison CD-8 speakers and Carver separates and Philips CD player, this system can really rock.

You're absolutely correct about that. Yesterday, I was playing cuts from American Idiot and my daughter recognized more than a few as being played on Radio Disney. Sadly enough, that gave them more "cred" as far as she was concerned.

As for 21st Century Breakdown, I picked up the download from Amazon yesterday for $4.99. I can't post links from my phone, but I have a direct link on my review site (link below) if anyone needs it. I haven't gotten all the way through it yet, and although I like it, it seems to follow a formula very similar to what was used for the brilliant American Idiot.

I have seen them several times in their early years and I used to like GD but then they became to political and critical of the 'idiots' buying their music.:thumbsdn::thumbsdn:
No thanks!!! I bought the album for music, NOT a lecture.
I won't be buying this one because I prefer not to pay to be lectured by my music.

I loved Kerplunk and Dookie. I don't really like anything after that though. I agree their newer stuff is too political, and is a really bad casualty of The Loudness War. I just can't get into the sound. There is a lack of dynamics in both the audio quality, and the performance.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I also feel the same way about Weezer. They were one of the best bands of the 90's with brilliant song writing. Now they are singing songs about eating pork and beans....

I saw a TV performance by Greenday recently. They were playing one of their new songs, and I thought it was their worst yet. They really wrote some great songs in the 90's. It's funny how creativity is not something you can develop over time. It's either there or it isn't. IMHO...
 
Green Day, too political ??

This is rock music. The rock music I grew up on was about drugs, sex, love and politics - usually a rant against whoever was in the power. But I was not analyzing the lyrics of classic rock back in the day. Just enjoying it.

I could care less about Green Day's politics - this album rocks.

:thmbsp: Both politics and religion have been central in their past two albums. While I don't agree with most of their politics I still enjoy their music. Let's see how many rock bands, or any musicians, never had politics in their music. I'll let you know when I think of one.......:scratch2:

I look forward to your review. I too think American Idiot was brilliant and is easily my favorite album of the current decade. I still can't get enough of the song Jesus of Suburbia. I haven't anticipated an album release this much since U2's Uchtung Baby was released as the first full studio follow up to The Joshua Tree. While I'm enjoying 21st Century a lot it's a tall order to top AI.
 
I gave up on this band when American Idiot came out. As an American, all I can say is, guys, go back to Canada and shut up already. :smoke:

This is not a bash Green Day thread it's about the new album. If you bought 21st Century Breakdown and don't like it please post your comments. If you want to bash Green Day please start a new thread.
 
Still about Green Day, screw the politics- I just listened to a 30 second clip of GD doing a cover of the Who's "A Quick One", evidently a bonus track on the new release. I always loved the original (and the 'oo!) It sounded like a solid rendition.

Not a prob, dude. I realize this is a poor excuse, but I had a rough day and almost wrecked my ride on the way home because of a cellphone driver...grr. On top of that I was starvin for a decent meal.

You know, I used to really dig Green Day. Dookie, in particular, which I have on cassette. Very good album.
