Green Day's new album: 21st Century Breakdown

Not a prob, dude. I realize this is a poor excuse, but I had a rough day and almost wrecked my ride on the way home because of a cellphone driver...grr.
No worries, glad you are safe and not writing from your laptop in a hospital. :thmbsp:

Still about Green Day, screw the politics- I just listened to a 30 second clip of GD doing a cover of the Who's "A Quick One", evidently a bonus track on the new release. I always loved the original (and the 'oo!) It sounded like a solid rendition.

I also found this bonus track on Itunes and downloaded it for the car. I must say that while they don't really put a fresh spin on the tune, I'm really enjoying it nonetheless. They sound like they are definitely big fans of The Who.

A friend burnt me the album and let me say I can understand why people like green day but I hated the album.

I bought AI a couple of years ago and still haven't listened to it. One of these days when I'm in the mood I'll give it a listen, I'll probably own the new one before I listen to AI...lol!

Also have Radiohead "In Rainbows" and Neil Young's "Chrome Dreams" and haven't listened to either. I have to be in the right mood to listen music other than jazz or classical.

Interesting. While GD has their roots in punk think of AI as power pop. Nothing hard core about it IMO. Check it out sometime and decide for yourself.

I had the new CD cranked in the garage yesterday, late afternoon. Probably the third time I've listened to it. This time I focused on the second half of the CD.

Overall I like it but it's not as good as AI which I agree was one of the best rock releases of the past 10 years.

I'll keep listening to the new CD. The song "Gloria" is terrific and entire CD is good, just not blown away by it like American Idiot.

Cheers, Snade

The LP rocks

I have had the 180g double LP for about 5 days now and played every day and it is amazing it has grown on me with every play
dont have the CD version but the vinyl is dead quiet [pressed in the Netherlands] and very well done.
sonics are off the hook and the music is well Green Day fans will love it.
Rock on.

Yeah man its good :thmbsp::thmbsp:

I think that's what is unique about the latest Green Day releases, they get better and better after repeated listening.

Not many rock or pop albums released these days do that.

I'm liking this Green Day album more and more. :thmbsp:

the sound and the stuff they did, the recording technicians went all out like they did with American Idiot there is some really cool recording techniques that make it a lot of fun to listen to.
I dont know all the songs or which one it is yet but there is one where, they put the guitar right in your face it sounded like the guitar :guitar: was plugged directly to my amps.

I've posted a full review of the 2 LP 180 gram vinyl set of 21st Century Breakdown here: http://myvinylreview.blogspot.com/2009/06/green-day-21st-century-breakdown-180.html
Nice review and after reading it I need to get AI on vinyl!

Your quote below pretty much sums up this album. I like it a lot but it sounds too familiar, too much like AI. While IMO it would be difficult for any of their future material to live up to the AI standard I'm still enjoying 21st Century Breakdown a lot.

"As soon as you drop the needle on 21st Century Breakdown, you're reminded of American Idiot. Lots of muted vocals followed by crashing guitars and drums--they employ this so much, that at times it starts to feel a bit formulaic. "

My Son got us (my Wife and I) into GD several years ago.

Snade, you are right the new album grows on you big time especially after seeing them live ...We saw them last Monday at the United Center. I was moderately excited prior to going. When they started, you could tell it was going to be quite good. The place was packed. Everyone stood the entire show! They were fantastic. ...probably one of the best live shows I have ever seen!! They sounded fantastic and Billie Joe is hilarious!! Throws around A LOT of F-bombs and never stops moving.

I'm Not F!@king Around

Horseshoes and Handgrenades kicks ass at about 100 db. I like the nod to Them (Gloria) at the end. This must have been the type of song Maxell had in mind when they made their classic poster.

I've been listening to 21st a lot and starting thinking I liked it better than American Idiot. So I listened to AI a few times through while driving to and from work. After listening to both of them I still like AI better but 21st is very close. I give the nod to AI for being a bit edgier although it is more political. Oh and because the song Jesus of Suburbia is fantastic. 21st seems a bit more pop oriented but if it had come before AI I might choose it as the better album. Regardless both are excellent works of pop/rock/punk music.
