Greetings everyone,
I am a long-time lurker finally joining the fray. Oregon born, now in Berlin, DE.
As a sound-designer and recording engineer 99% of my investment in gear over the last 20 years has been in pro-audio. After some false starts I took my McIntosh 2205 + Yamaha NS10m units out of storage and set them up in our living room with a Benchmark DAC-1 (fed from Google audio Chromecast) an Ecler DJ mixer (to provide routing and amplification for TT and DAC) and a Technics-1200 with a Shure SC35C stylus.
It could be better... but after seeing the joy of my wife and child discover music on vinyl I have come to the conclusion that:
Whatever music-listening system you are hearing to is the best system if you are listening with someone you love.
That said, there is still so much to discover! Recently a friend turned me on to the Shure SC35C stylus. Old hat for many but, after listening via an m44-7 the SC35C showed me my music all over again. This is magic I like and seek more of.
My 20s were spent listening to old Bogen tube PA units patched into whatever speakers were around. 40 year old tubes and caps made for a rough listening experience but, the euphonic distortion usually made up for it. Now at age 48 I want that sound again–without the buzz, hum and crazy ghost-ringmodulation.
