Happy Holidays, everyone! I have been diving into AK for a while now, and finally decided to sign up. Life is flux and sometimes you just have to make changes in order to keep it fresh and interesting.
I’ve been collecting records since I was six years old and my dad would bring home 45s from his work at a Boston vending machine company. My first record player (again when I was six) was a Kenner Close ‘n’ Play, which I quickly passed over for my dads Garrard Model One. Over the next 50 years, and in spite of a very mobile 28 years in the Air Force, I continued my hobby. I ended up retired in southern Maryland with 2600 LPs, a Linn Axis turntable with Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge, ELAC Debut 6.2 speakers, a Cambridge Audio Topaz SR20 integrated amp and a Pro-Ject VCS.
So, last year we decided to sell our house on the Chesapeake Bay and move into DC due to my wife’s commuting issues. Since we would have much less room in our townhouse and my collection would not have a dedicated space I would need to reimagine things. I ended up selling my LPs and equipment, and buying a BlueSound PowerNode 2i streamer and subscribing to Qobuz.
Of course we all know what happened next: COVID-19. My wife started telecommuting, we took our house off the market and hunkered down until things settled. Nowhere to go, stuck in my man cave, and I re-evaluated my hobby. Thanks to AK, I ended up buying a few headphones and, most important, indulging in some Zu Audio Dirty Weekends.
In retrospect I am glad I switched over to streaming. I was spending my time looking for LPs, cleaning and repairing, organizing and logging them etc. Now I spend my time listening to music, and I listen to a much broader selection of music than I did before.
