Grille Cloth

I found this

Thought I would bring back this thread instead of start a new one. I found some speaker grille cloth that looked like it might work for older speakers.
Select Products

Click on the fabrics. The sebring cloth looks good. The tweed selections are good also.

I used Burlap to redo KLH 24's. JoAnn Fabric's. $1.18 got enough to do four speakers +. they have about six different colors. Works for me.

thanks

Thanks for the info. I was at JoAnn Fabric a month or so ago looking around. Didn't find anything. Went today after work and asked for burlap. They had a few colors and $3 a yard. Now I know where to redo my grille cloth.

maybe

I think they did have black burlap. Or you could buy the white and dye it black. The weave wasn't too tight and the burlap felt very light so I think it was just as transparent as the stuff on vintage speakers.

If that's so then I'll mask the L33 grille frames and paint them black instead of the disheartening stainy ??? they are now.

I'm 1/4 of the way done :thmbsp:

They had black, yellow. orange.wine or burgandy, red + two shades of white. one of the shades looked like original looking grille cloth. so it is available just might not be in stock.

Paint will fill in the cloth and look poorly. Not to mention making it less sonically transparent.

Not yer father's JBLs (still yer father's Brubeck)...

They appear to have no blobs or crap, they are not stiffened and they could be touched up by spraying a light second coat even. The frame and it's trim were of such dubious shape and construction anyway that taking that apart would've been worse (I'm not good with 1960s trim), and I'm not thinking of rebuilding L33s in them so I could experiment some. Now, if you could tell me how in the world I can recover those pinhole terminals to rebuild that one Altec Three with? The holes that the ass'ys fit in are too cramped, especially on the one that was not badged as it was SMALLER... fat fingers and it deserves banana jacks. Thanks...

OKAY...B and C were the same and D doesn't look good with a 300 KILOpixel camera but I can assure you it LOOKS good enough to the eye and will suffice for me or my nephew for now. He knows I'm not Michaelangelo and I've yet to top the Holly Hobbie decopaged slanting book shelf I made for mom in third grade (sheesh :puke2: ) but at least I used the last dollar I had to flirt with the counter girl

There is a JO-ANN 1.5 miles from this computer, and it gives me another excuse to see my old friend Dorie, formerly a karaoke DJ at a place I sang at for years :D :D :D

I can't think of an uglier way to "fix" grille cloth than to spray-paint it. Sounds pretty ghetto to me!

I need grill cloth, of the light and stretchy kind, to redo a couple of sets of Pioneer HPM-100 Grills. This job will not take the stiffer kind of grill cloth normally available, since it is not simply stretched flat, but must stretch, without wrinkles or folds, around from the front, around the sides, and staple to the back of a wooden frame, about 1" thick (w/ rounded edges). Darn tough stuff to find.

This stuff is so thin you can just begin to see the drivers through it, even on pristine units (original).

Any suggestions?

Rich P

I don't know HPM-100's, but doesn't really sound any different than most grille recovering tasks. If there's a JoAnne Fabrics in Tucson, they carry stretchy-ass black grille cloth.
