Grills, I don't need no stinking grills...

Are your speakers naked?

A lot of speakers I've owned sounded better with grilles off, but since the JBL Studio 590's horn response is above 1400Hz, there's not much reason acoustically to remove them. Occasionally I do though since there can be some reflections in the midrange, but they look much better with grilles mounted.

These are furniture grade speakers and I prefer the grills on, but some of my friends say I should leave them off. What do you guys think?

The only speakers that I ever have the grills off are the ones with a veneered front baffle like the NS-690iii. Much nicer to look at with them off. If the baffle is black, they're on...

on my garage speakers which are mirage sm-1, it actually says on the back ,for best performance leave grills on.

I would leave them off. The different colors, esp. the red, the logo and shiny parts are so much cooler to look at than cloth. Nice speakers.

I go naked sometimes and sometimes not. Depends on the speaker. Valencia's and L222's naked at the moment.

Grills

I suppose I started leaving the grills on at about the same time I got rid of the cinder block audio tower and the futon couch.
Maybe 1980?

Leave them ON

There's a time and place for relations with a da-glo red foam surround. The living room in front of company is not it.
Leave the grills on. They didn't make them furniture grade for nothing.

And another thing...

For the love of all that is holy, do NOT light that candle where it sits.

Cats

I have cats,
you guess.......

For the most part, domesticated cats are the most worthless, amoral ihabitants in the house. It's amazing how hard you have to traumatize them to keep them from messing with the most important furniture in the living room. It would be poetic justice to shave them and weave the fur into an exotic grill cloth.

Grills yes

The pair of Altecs have had augmentation so the grills stay on(most of the time). The lamp stays off when the music is on which is most of the time. :music:

Wouldn't it be funny if grills were optional? I can't help wondering how many "guys" would look at the sales person "how much? Really? Keep them, I'll run mine naked".

I only have grills on a couple of my speakers, even though I HAVE grills for all my speakers. Funny how many times I read that people leave there grills off.

So wondering, how many people have naked speakers and how many don't.

You're the first person on here I've seen with these speakers. How do you like them? I do like their design visually.

Great speakers. Really don't know of another I can say beats them for anything near the price, and I've owned and heard a bunch.

It's too bad JBL doesn't push the Studio 500 series more. I think people would buy them like hotcakes if they could only hear them, but they can be heard at some Synthesis dealers I suppose.

While I do like the look of my set up with the grills on, we have 3 cats that also love them... They destroyed a set of crap Pioneer twin woofer grills (Free from curb). When I was able to start collecting some good gear I did not feel comfortable leaving the grills on. If it were not for the love of my pets they would be on... :)

Cool thread!

I leave the grills off of my Sonus Faber Minuettos most of the time, and my KEF LS50s aren't made to be used with grills.

Naked.
My Persian cat, bless his furry little soul, never, ever touched my speakers in all of his 21 years on Earth.
The Pioneer CS-99A look better w/o those silly grills and sound waay better as well.
Get a load of this- Those grills have TWO layers of sound-stopping fabric. One just wasn't enough.
Chewie, my leaky Yorkie, will get his nuts cut off if he ever wets them thar speakers.
At the moment, he loves to lift his leg on the bird cages.
