I heard this statement the other day: "Grunge is why Rock "N" Roll music is on life support, if not dead." Well, whoever the philosopher was that crafted that statement, I must say... I very much agree. Grunge destroyed Rock music, to the point that all that is left today, is mono-note rap.

That too is an opinion... although, one I personally do not share. Grunge, in my view, contributed very little (perhaps even nothing at all), to the music, and the era preceding the "Grunge years" was spectacular in so many ways. ;) Grunge, in my view is a special niche like disco, but less creative, broad, and most certainly with less "then-current" appeal. Then again, if everyone had the same opinions, it would be very boring indeed. :hug:

if you wanted to listen to u2 or rem in the 90s, that's fine but i would have stabbed my eardrums out if i had to listen to 10 years of that crap:rflmao:

I'm a metal girl... and actually dislike both U2 or REM. Even after all these years, I have not warmed-up to either of those two. :eek: My older sister was into Grunge, and it was so grating on me. Then again, my favorite music, is not very popular either, being 80's metal. :rflmao::biggrin:

i'm a metal head! if it wasn't for metal and grunge, the 90s might as well not even existed.
 
There will always be Rock. It’s just not the dominant form of musical expression. Hip Hop has been at the No. 1 spot for worldwide revenues for quite some time now. EDM is No. 2.

There is only a little metal I like from the 90s, and that typically from the early 90s. Deep Purple's: The Battle Rages On (1993), was great... Early, early, early Sabaton was in 1999, but I may be wrong on that. Their music does have an 80s vibe to it actually which I really love. :D
 
True Rock and Roll was, is and always will be about a few choice topics. They are, in no particular order....

1) Social change (giving the finger to authority)
2) Getting laid
3) A healthy way to blow off teen angst and aggression
4) Getting drunk, high, or otherwise chemically altered.

Since everything about rock and roll could be construed as misogynist, sexist, primitive, etc, it is already having trouble finding a sympathetic ear.
Couple that with the corporatized **** that passed for rock in the late '80's (now replaced with goofy adult nursery rhymes, just as cliche' and trite, but everyone scared to criticize it) and you have the scant offerings we have now.

Good music needs performances to improve and refine. Think of the sheer volume of gigs the Fab Four, The Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. played.

BAR POLISH. Accept no substitute.

One day, a band stinking of a barstool dragged through dried vomit will stumble onto the scene. They'll be resplendent in stained jeans and ratty tees, and emerge with a vitality, an honest and sincere truth about them, such as Guns and Roses did in the year of '87 (I was a high school sophomore, and knew they were special) and they will sell like hot cakes.

Or maybe not. Hell, who knows?

i feel that you just have a problem with the 90s in general:rflmao:

slayer , pantera, megadeth, anthrax, testament, etc etc etc. all put out great albums in the 90s.

if womeone asked me what was good rock n roll in the 90s, i wouldn't have an answer
 
Hmm, seeing as how many "grunge" guitarists were inspired by them, I wonder if KISS would have survived the 90s and had the comeback they enjoyed with their reunion tour.
 
Oh, and one more thing - the folks from Seattle HATED the name "grunge". To them, it was just their type of music.

Also, and I know this should be in my unpopular opinion thread, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains had more in common with Black Sabbath than they did with whatever Nirvana was doing.

i can't stand nirvarna myself but most other grunge was great
 
Genres rise and fall in popularity. Grunge is no different.
Does popularity define the importance of genres? I guess it has to, sadly.
One of my all-time favorite guitarists is Bob Mould, nicknamed The Godfather of Grunge, but I can’t name a single grudge band I would buy a record of. So there’s a lot of gray area when defining music.
