GW: Technics SL-1960

Picked up a turntable today. Technics SL-1960. It appears to be a well-made unit, Japanese. Early 1980's??? I am guessing this one is probably better than the SL-D2 I have been using. It may become my "keeper".

I am missing one of the little spring feet. No problem, I always wanted a wood base turntable, anyway. I come up with something.

I could not find anything on it here.

The Technics tables are solidly built.

I've just let a D2 or D202 go (forget the model), and currently have a Technics SL-1300.

I picked up the SL-1800 model for $10 at a church flea market. I cleaned it up, deoxited the speed pots, and installed a Grado Blue cart. I am so happy. Much more musical than my Pioneer PL-7. Most of my music budget is now spent on vinyl.

Cool thing about yours is it is a direct drive changer... did it come with the multiplay spindle?

I have the same unit in silver. Only problem I have is with the lid. It's so heavy that it does not want to stay up. It is taking a back seat to a SL D3 now.

My return to vinyl was through an SL1950 picked up early this year. I had the big spindle replaced with a little one and had the Ortofon cart swapped from my new Pro-Ject Xpression into it. Works great and is now performing spinning duties at our cottage on weekends!

The only thing I noticed was that putting my 400g clamp on it caused some grinding noises. I suspect either the bearings are going or that you just shouldn't put heavy weights on direct drive turntables?! Other than that I found that it did a great job and is pretty much responsible for my re-introduction to vinyl and my fast growing 300+ collection of the black gold...
