A speaker protection circuit is a "must". The units are old, transistors have a MTBF so probably on the upward trend
of the "bathtub" (curve). Plenty of cheap protection kits on the bay. I've used this type in about 10 amps,

I've been working on a 19 off and on for past 3 months, only need to mount the spkr protect kit, not much room.
I also fit a dedicated transformer (12-0-12) rather that tap the audio supply
