Hafler dh200 on stacked advents

stacking 2 pairs of large advents in parallel on a pioneer sx-850 is probably not a good idea, but if you had a hafler dh200 running off the 850’s preamp out, could that handle it?


This spec sheet says:

Stereo 4Ω

107 mV for 1 W output into 4Ω.

1.07 V for 100 W output into 4Ω (5A fuse limit).

1.41 V for 175 W output into 4Ω (beyond 5A speaker fuse limit; at 6.6A, a 5A AGC fuse ought to last about 15 seconds before blowing).

1.91 V for 290 W RMS in 10mS bursts at clipping into 4Ω at 1 burst per second.


I know stacking large advents is a sales gimmick etc., not looking for opinions on that, and I’ve only got one pair of them at the moment anyway… but if this will work (not destroy anything), I want to find another pair, just so I can see what it sounds like on the greatest song ever written, Boston’s “More than a Feeling”

Why do you say that? Sure it would sell more speakers, but it is much more fun to listen to than the single Advents as when folks are using them it isn’t for the final word in high end audiophile reproduction but listening enjoyment. There is just way more party when using two pair.

Sure it will work, up to the limits of the fuse unless you increase the fuse above 5A. At that point one needs to try not to overdrive any part of the system. Within the limits of the fuse, the stacked Advents should be comfortably loud in anything but the largest rooms. Party On!

Give it a try, report back what you think.

I have been looking into this for a while and have seen some people think it’s amazing while others have called it a dumb gimmick to try and sell 2x as many speakers. I just said that to keep those haters at bay. I really want to try it out and with this post really only wanted to get the technical advice (and for that I thank you!) and maybe some confirmation bias that it’s fun and cool

It is. Had em in the house in college and they were the thing. Didn’t sit there straining to identify each finger position on the violin, we’re playing music to enjoy music. They did a nice job of powering the room, something singles can’t do.
 
Friends of mine had stacked Advents, back in the '70s. I was bowled over by the sound!

I wanted the same but didn't have the budget. Ended up replacing my 12" woofer 3-ways with Epicure 20s. (They're somewhat the equivalent of 2 EPI 100s in one cabinet. They were marketed as "semi-reflecting" with one pair of drivers facing forward and the other pair angled upward.)

They didn't shake the house like stacked Avents, but they sounded vastly better than my 3-ways. (I'm still listening to those speakers, half a century later!)
 
Hmmm.... I wonder how stacked D9s would sound. I have more than enough power. Only problem would be D9s have a seperate base apart from the huge speakers themselves. With the mods and ballasting I did to my single pair, they weigh 137lbs each

That will depend on what the impedance of the Advents is. If they don't dip too low, you should be fine.

If you are going to try that (stacked speakers) a suggestion would be get a 2nd Hafler amp to run the 2nd pair and split the RCA pre-out from the Pioneer receiver.
its not just nominal impedance rating published on the back of the speaker its the impedance change with respect to frequency where you may run into some trouble with a single amp.

Other option would be get a Krell, Mark Levinson or Rowland or similar that can drive a direct short and does not care what the changing speaker impedance does.
 
I'd be very careful ... that Pioneer isn't exactly known for a robust power supply and stacked advents have a reputation as amp killers because of a couple of unusual impedance dips ... but the Hafler should carry the load as long as the Pioneer is only doing preamp duty..
