Hafler M5 speakers

I’m going to look at a newer Hafler amp (TA1100) later today. It’s cheap (40$). The guy says he’ll throw in some Hafler M5 speakers for 20 bucks. There isn’t much info out there about them. And almost zero pricing info. The couple reviews I’ve read weren’t really good or bad. People say they are kind of average.

They have size going for them, but do I really want a pair of Hafler speakers?

I have a variety of speakers right now. Let’s say 15 pairs plus parts to build another half dozen.

Maybe the Haflers would replace the Minimus 7s in my kids stereo. That might be a good use for them.

Usually I buy speakers and if I like them I’ll keep them, and if I don’t like them I’ll flip them. With these Haflers I’m not sure I could get my 20 bucks back. Lol.
There is a pair on Reverb, but no completed sales on eBay.

I said screw it and bought the speakers too. The amp and speakers are in really good shape and in their original boxes. I’ll post some pics later.

You're into them pretty cheap, hopefully you will find a good use for them.

The kids might not think so. They’ve been wanting a Bluetooth speaker instead of a regular stereo. I told them they can have a Bluetooth speaker when they’re 18 :)

Do they want a Bluetooth speaker for the portability or so they can stream from their phones? If the latter, why not add an inexpensive Bluetooth receiver to the Aux input on their stereo? Bluetooth 5.0 is very good.

I think they want a Bluetooth speaker because they think it’s cool. Lol.
Right now they listen to music from an iPad plugged into their stereo via a 3.5mm to rca cord. They don’t really need the portability.

I replaced the usb jack on a JBL flip for my FIL, and ever since the kids saw that they’ve wanted one.

When they get old enough to drive and have real cell phones I would get them some BT speakers for sure.
I definitely enjoy the portability of being able to listen to a BT speaker at work.

So the seller messaged me and said he has another set of these speakers. One has a blown tweeter. He said I could have them. So, now I’m trying to figure out if I can actually replace the tweeter or not.

Obviously I double checked the tweeter is blown. It reads open on my DMM. There is a little heatsink that snaps on the back. I took that off. It looks like the tweeter is bonded to the mounting plate. It might be impossible to replace just the tweeter.

Here are some pics.

These are the tiniest little tweeters I’ve ever seen BTW.

Did you ever pursue this repair? I just picked up a pair with the same blown tweeter problem. Looking for a replacement.
Thanks,
Geoff

This is likely product from the last iteration of the Hafler name, after Radial Engineering bought the name. They tried to revive both Dynaco and Hafler brands but they seem to have gone out of business. The only thing they have in common with David is the name.

I did not try to repair the bad tweeter. I’m not sure you could take them apart to repair.
I do still have the pair of speakers.
