Happened Again-2230 Added to the Family

After telling myself that I really didn’t “need” anymore receivers now, and I should save for Xmas and a Disneyland trip in December……….a Marantz alert came across my phone. “Marantz Reciever $150.” Well, it doesn’t hurt to look. It was a 2230. The ad said it was working. The pics weren’t the best. I figured I would offer $100 because any 22xx was worth that much. He accepted and we made the deal 30 minutes later at a gas station.
First impressions: straight faceplate and unit in good cosmetic condition. Extremely dirty. Nicotine all over faceplate and smelled like 1000 cartons of Marlboros. Someone had been inside based on side screws, but it looks original. Ridiculously dirty inside. Had what looked like tree bark inside.
Passed dim bulb. Knobs feel like sand inside when turning. Injected a sine wave. Scope looks like a hot mess.

Still for $100 bucks, I’ll take it. (Although the wife said “You should have offered $30.”)

Love the "Before" pics! Gonna be fun cleaning that up. But really satisfying.

At todays prices? The wife wrong, you stole it. Just act humble and say " you're right dear-you are always right."

Pretty close Ray and Ocdecio. I started with a round soft brush that I think I picked up at Freight an Harbor. I used this to knock off the caked-on dust best I could. Still very dirty. I damn near need an N 95 mask to keep me from choking. Then I fired up my air compressor and dusted it out. A combination of blowing out and using the brush. I then used Simple Green on a rag and cleaned the chassis best I could. After most of the dust was out, I used some stuff called Weiman Stainless Steel Cleaner & Polish. I saw a gentleman use this method on YouTube. This stuff sprays on kinda oily and at first it seems like a mistake to use on circuit boards. However, you blow it out with the compressor several times and wipe up excess. It does dry and makes inside and boards look great. Considering where this one started, huge improvement. Probably took no more than an hour. Attached is video link.
I’m gonna try to get to pots and buttons today and make an assessment of what is working. Thanks

Hmmmm... you and the wife could have gone in as a team... 100 dollars, already upset wife says... for that... then offer a little drama about the money and she says how about 30... play the television husband and shrug at the guy, like what can I do... a guy moment, maybe he would have sold it for 30, it does need cleaning. And if not, man up and pay the hundred because it is worth it. You got a deal... just had to have a wive appreciation moment.
