Hardy, Elba out as James bond

In show business there's no such thing as bad publicity. It doesn't cost much to launch a new rumor every few weeks, and it gets us all involved. As long as Idris Elba and others are willing to play along, it's free PR for everyone.

Daniel Craig looked the part, as did Connery. Stunts have to be physically plausible to be good. It used to annoy me watching "The Americans" to watch the petite Keri Russell tossing around big thugs.

Bond shouldn't look like a Marvel comic hero, but Ralph Fiennes as John Steed in "The Avengers" movie was a farce. Sorry Ralph!

Most of what took place in The Americans -- not only but definitely including the Keri as "Elizabeth" horse manure -- bugged me. A diatribe for a different thread.

Why do they have to "reinvent" Bond? I just think "modernize" him to fit today's world where there are certainly folks out there doing much as he did back in the 1960s. Actually, I thought the last few Bond premises were timely, but Tom Cruise's Mission Impossibles and Matt Damon's Bourne's were certainly similar offerings. But all this pandering to diversity irks me as Bond was a Caucasian male and anybody in that role who doesn't fit that role is purely Hollywood's pandering for a buck, which is what it does...

FWIW, I liked Craig's Bond a lot and think he's going to be a tough act to follow, just like Connery was.

Anyone qualified can be 007, James Bond was the first and maybe the last if they retire the designation.
If not-----.

Precisely. I get so tired of "blacking" established franchises. No, recasting an established character with a black actor does not make you progressive, or anti-racist, or whatever. Making a new intellectual property, where the race of the actor is integral, and should be black, does. For instance, I would like to see a spy movie in the Caribbean starring a Jamaican man or woman. James Bond is a native Scotsman. End of discussion.

Actually, the last flick, and perhaps another, did have a non-Bond 007. Nomi was 007, but not James Bond, after Bond retired in "No time to Die"

And there it is, moving on.
Daniel Craig is a good point to retire J. B. and pass the 007 torch to a modern relatable context.
The British secret agent franchise needn't stay stuck in Fleming's generation and Flemings culture, but good new stories in the present on the 007 premise are waiting to be told to a new younger audience.

Friend once worked for a chain of 24/7 markets that would occasionally have locations repeatedly hit by armed robberies, sometimes violent. They had a specialist on call they would send out to deal with it, an unimpressive quiet milquetoast with skills who would sub for the regular staff and end it, always.
That guy would make a more interesting undercover agent than an obvious buff horndog with a gun bulge under a dinner jacket.
Jmho.
This would make a good movie in and of itself.

I am not sure that trendiness to the young is a needed direction. James Bond is a confident man of skill and charisma. While his actions and comments may indeed be classed as chauvinist, it is only those of such low value (women who have never merited them, nor men who have never mastered them) that do so.

Bond retired, 007 slot is open to qualified individuals.

In Bonds glory days, it was a Rolex GMT, Aston Martin DB, Minox camera, Minifon wire recorder, Microdot film reduction, Walther PPK.
Modern "tradecraft" stealth has certainly changed the details.

The was a pretty stupid "reality" show premise, "Dog, the bounty hunter", that was the exact opposite of stealth. (Never saw it, staged "reality" shows aren't my thing)
How stupid his prey must be not to know the famous goober mullet circus is in town when he shows up there.
Austin Powers was a send-up of the James Bond obvious "secret" agent fantasy trope.
Some folks still want the Bond fantasy avatar.

It depends on where they take the franchise. Please remember that Craig's first Bond movie, Casino Royale, was a redo of the non-Ion movie way back when and served as a functional reboot to the series. The Brosnan-era support actors were retired and restructured in a way to go back to the Connery era lineup, with a male M, younger Q, etc. Naomi Harris was a very nice way to be flexible on an actress' race, because Moneypenny is not specified to be a specific ethnicity the way Bond is. I think they will release a movie no sooner than five years, it will be a reboot, it will probably be woke as a joke, and it will flop. I hope I am wrong.

I could agree if you hadn't killed your point in the next to last sentence with culture wars coded word choice.

Solipsism is a hell of a drug.
My point exactly. Fleming's James Bond is of an era when native born Brits were the only folk that mattered, and everyone else might come on for a ride if they knew and kept their place.
That exclusive world dominance view is expired and no longer in effect.
007 should represent present realities, or remain a fantasy avatar of past glory.

It's too bad we don't have a twenty five year old Patrick McGoohan available, he was the perfect mix of intelligence and menace.

I have no idea who could be the next Bond, but he must be a Brit.

I was referring to this. I did not "kill my post." You may not agree with it; you may not like it, but its validity is independent of your opinion.

Regarding your second point, perhaps so, however, in which case, Mr. Bond and his universe should be retired, with no one updating it to fit present realities and narratives. While I have no issue with new franchises being made in whatever fashion their creators wish them to be and sharing whatever narrative they wish to have; I do draw issue with politicizing a beloved film franchise from years past by pretending to have artistic vision by either making the previously male cast all women (Ghostbusters 2016), changing the race of the main character as a statement (Annie, The Little Mermaid), or making something previously cerebral and though provoking science fiction into summer action blockbusters (Chris Pine Star Treks) when all you are doing is, to quote a linked article, is taking one of their old ones, blowing the dust off, and putting a black lead in there.

Make your own movies, or wait 50 years for a remake so everyone who was there when it came out is old or dead. You'll note that the name of the franchise is JAMES BOND, not DOUBLE OH SEVEN. Let's not piggyback yet another woke agenda (I'm using that word again, oh noes!) on a franchise to cheat its message into popular consideration. Let it die, or be true to the originals.
