Harman Kardon 330A transistor substitution woes - help needed

I’m working on restoring a Harman Kardon 330a amplifier that was blowing fuses due to multiple shorted transistors. Among other issues, one of the four CDC8002/9002 “flying saucer” transistors was blown. Following advice from an old thread on a different amplifier model, I replaced all four with BC639 and BC640 transistors.

When I turned the amp on with speakers connected, I only heard noise and distortion out of both channels. To troubleshoot, I reinstalled two of the original (still-working) “flying saucer” transistors in one channel, because I had also replaced the output transistors (one of which was blown) and needed to confirm where the fault lay. The channel with the original “flying saucers” now works fine, so I know the issue lies in the other channel with the BC639/BC640 transistors.

I’ve verified the pinouts multiple times using a multi-function transistor tester, and I carefully bent the legs to match the original CDC8002/CDC9002 layout. Still, there is noise and distortion in the channel using the BC639/BC640 pair.

My question is: Could this be a bad transistor substitution for this particular circuit, or is there something else I might be missing? I'm particularly keen to understand why this particular substitution does not work in this circuit, and how I might identify a substitution that will work.

Also, I didn't try to do any matching on the PNP/NPN pairs since a) I don't have the right test equipment and b) the hfe for the BC639/BC640 using my multi-function tester was so wildly different I knew I could not use that method to perform matching.

The transistors in question are TR507/TR508 and TR607/TR608.

Another note: Both channels were clear with the transistor substitutes if i kept the volume extremely low - my theory is this is the 'class A' region where the NPN/PNP pairs don't need to complement each other

Alright well I've been playing with the trim pots on the channel with the transistor substitutes and i can get output that somewhat resembles the input albeit with a lot of distortion if i peg one trim pot all the way clockwise and the other one in the opposite direction. I would conclude from this that these are passable substitute transistors and to eliminate distortion I will need to find a way to match the npn/pnp pairs properly
 
I’ve used the KSC2690A/KSA1220A combination multiple times in these 330A for the CDC8002/9002 driver pair with excellent results.
I will continue working on this. I'd like to find a solution with current-production transistors.

I noticed my NPN/PNP transistors (all of them in the batch) have wildly mismatched gain. It's like BC639/BC640 don't actually complement each other.

I could try ordering MJE340 and MJE350 transistors now that mouser has them back in stock
 
This is an old stereo full of frail parts, and likely very dirty controls. There are some threads here about redoing an hk330A, I suggest you read through all of them. I do believe there are some parts lists mentioned in those threads, that should make your parts choice quite easy. There is also some videos on Youtube about restoring HK330A and 330B, I suggest you watch them, I think they are by Trevor's bench. You will need a dimbulb tester, there is no way around that. Read up on the DBT and build one. For your HK330A a 50W bulb should be plenty. Your HFE gain concern is only valid for the differential pair on the amp, it is not an issue with your drivers. For parts you need that digikey no longer sells, such as the KSA1220, take a look on ebay for seller Peace Love Music out of Milwaukee, he has the genuine KSA1220. It sounds like this would be your first vintage audio restore, the hk330A is about medium difficulty overall so expect it to be quite challenging for you.

And to repeat myself, read up on and build a DBT, stay on it until your unit is fully repaired, you will not need to be off of it until it is time to set your bias and finalize the restore. Operating without one is asking for burned up parts, blown fuses, and assorted disappointments.

If you're determined to experiment with currently-available devices, then either of these two pairs would be my next choice (to replace the CDC8/9 or 2960A/1220A pairs):

TTA004B -- TTC004B
TTA008B -- TTC015B
 
KSC2690A are readily available but the KSA1220AYS are pretty much NLA right now, except from Ebay.

For the 8002's, I ordered the Toshiba TTC004BQ and for the 9002 flying saucers, Toshiba TTA004BQ's. They were ordered around March last year and it took until August to receive them as they were backordered and I'm glad I ordered enough of them to last me a while.

Since then I heard of other combos which might work a bit better in these locations. Damned if I can find them in my notes but I know I wrote them down somewhere.

Mouser is currently out of both but are expecting a shipment in a few days.


 
Does this board look like yours? If so, you might want to take a close look at the metal hat transistors circled in yellow. Reason being, I've come across several bad ones, two on 330A's and one on a Rotel RX-400A, which has similar circuitry.

If you remove them for testing, you might want to mark the board first to get the pinout correct. Somehow I got it mixed up on one HK but luckily caught my mistake before powering it up.

They are prone to falling apart when you try to adjust them
You have been warned! ;)

If correct replacements are not on hand, I've wet them with DeoxIt D5 or F5 before to help break them loose after sitting for 50 years. It seems to help but I still feel a bit nervous giving them their first turn, even with the power off.

i'll probably order stock of few different transistors. it might be a while before i post again because i have to wait until i can put together a big enough order to justify Mouser's shipping cost

haven't tried it though they came up in my search for viable transistor substitutions that are current production

will you replace the trimmer resistors as well. i still need to find model numbers for suitable replacements. the ones i ordered ended up not fitting

For sure. I learned the hard way to always replace those. I use Bourns, usually 3362, for replacements.
I rebuilt the boards a bit over the weekend. Just waiting on the outputs to arrive from mouser
