Harman Kardon 330B.

One of the HK 330B's followed me home on the weekend. Picked it up at a pawn shop for less than $40 AUD. Not that common in Australia.

It looks dirty and needs a good vacuum, however it lights up. Both RHS & LHS fuses were blown although the RHS was working due to a piece of fine copper wire bridging it.

Static on the channel points to a recap and maybe a teak case to come.

Harman Kardon 330b top Yamaha Cr-420 bottom

Fired her up this morning after a quick look over the inside. I thought it looked dusty through the vents but was in pretty good shape.

Visit to the electronics store to get some De-Oxit, a couple of 1.5 amp fuses, some y-spade connectors which I wired up to some binding posts for quick comparison against the CR-420.

This is a great sounding clear little unit which lives up to all the reviews I've read up about it.

Left channel fades out slowly during shut down and there was a bit of static, so some new caps are in order.

I'm VERY happy with this, it's a keeper.

I have obtained a wonderful Harman Kardon 330B. It plays perfect, but there is one thing that makes me a little unsure. Here is the thing. When I power it up, I get a big "thump" sound through my speakers, you can see the woofers move. Is this normal for older gear, or do I have a problem? Any suggestions/thoughts from 330B owners?

I've been searching for my issue, and this might be it. I've got a Harman Kardon HK395i that upon power up with no volume, pushes out the woofers on the bookshelf speakers connected to them. They go out about 1/4" and then come back in, it takes about a second. There is no sound, but I took a DC reading of this, and the left channel starts out at 500mv, before settling down to around 60 mv in about 30 seconds. It seems that I might have a DC offset issue, as turning the trim pots have no affect.

Ok, I have ordered three different speaker delay + protection kits, I will install one or more of them, and then report back here with the results and a "how to".

Just to keep everyone up to date: I did order three speaker delay / D.C. Protection kits off eBay. Two turned out to be the same design and one was pre-assembled (that was a surprise).

None of them worked well. I don't understand why yet as this (speaker delay using relays) should be dead-simple.

I've ordered and receiver high quality parts for one of the boards and I'll try again once those are swapped in.



If that still fails, then I'll mod the circuit to be just a speaker delay and see if that works. If it does, then I'll post more about adding that to a HK330B and a Pioneer SX-something.

Hey, let us know if any progress on this. I just ordered one of the protection kits for a Kenwood KA-3500 that's going to come back to me with a little DC still happening. I want to add a protection circuit that will protect my (cheaper) speakers while not affecting sound quality too adversely.

Took the little 330b on a run with some 4 ohm speakers today. Didn't miss a beat and stayed surprisingly cool.

Mine did the same had already recapped all electrolytic except for the Main 2200 uF 63 v ELNA....decided to replace it and the thump on power up has gone..!

I have noticed power on pops on the 330X series. Never anything real bad though.

I put in a 4700 uF 80 volt Vishay main in..! ripple current rating of only 2.64 amp's....it fitted the mounting bracket diameter..
