Harman Kardon AVR 55 No Sound?

I was given this Harman Kardon AVR 55 but can't figure out why I am not getting any sound? I've tried all the functions, turned off surround mode, tried listening through headphone jack? All lights appear to function. Any suggestions?

What is that red led in the first pix, one of the video options? Try resetting this led.
Did you check for a factory reset procedure? Work through the troubleshooting chapter in the service manual? Possibly the unit is in protect mode, though power LED is green, do you hear a faint relay click 3-8 seconds after power on?

Who gave it to you? the reason I ask is if it were me I would contact that person and ask was it working properly before they gave it to you.

I would also empower myself to learn more about the unit by looking for the User and Service manual and then doing what @mbz suggests with regards to trouble shooting.

mbz, I could not find a factory reset procedure in the manual. I did try to use a slightly later model reset, but that did not work. I do hear a click after powering up the unit. The person that gave it to me moved, which was why I was given the unit.

I also could not find a reset procedure. You hear a faint relay click, combined with the green power indication probably indicates that the unit is not in protect which takes me back to configuration/setup. Did you sort out what that red led is (Video???) try depressing to reset...

mbz, Yes I held down the FRT REAR for 5 sec and the light turned off, but did not reset the unit? I'm really stumped. I also tried going through all the remote functions? No sound

Even though it is a newer receiver, does it have pre out / main in jacks?

There appears to be 6 fuses. One looks unusual with bubble. See Pictures or is this normal? I think its good. Now I'm even more puzzled?

Thanks for the pictures. Can you take a picture of the underside? You will need to remove the bottom plate. Here is an example.




The voltage regulator are the transistors with the heat sink and a power resistor nearby. These components get hot during operation and the solder could crack due to thermal stress.

By the way, the capacitors circled in red might need to get replaced in the near future.

cademan, yes it does have a pre out. What are your thoughts?

Just making sure that it has jumpers.

Sometimes when people acquire a unit with no sound, these jumpers are missing and new jumpers or RCA interconnects remedies the problem.

As far as the fuses go, you would need to test them with an ohm meter to see if they are good or not. Sometimes you can't tell just by looking.

I've done all I can with this unit. Time to give it away and hopefully someone else will get it working again.

Don't give up just yet. If the relay clicks, its usually a good sign that the internal amplifier is working.

Try pulling those jumpers and feed a phone into the "main-in" jacks and see if you get sound.

With the jumpers in place, make sure the tape monitor isn't on.
