Harman Kardon Citation Receiver (pictures)

I have been meaning to make this thread for a while. I got this a few months ago.

Here are some pictures, including nudies.

I had a friend help me get some nice photos.

It has everything I could need. Two phono, two auxillary, 3 pairs of speakers, it even has a midrange control. The touch controls are neat, but that is one more thing that could go wrong with it. And when you turn it off, it doesn't save the input selection, phono1 is selected when you turn it on.

I plan to recap it, but do not have the time yet. Anyone here have experience working on these?

Very nice, It's good to see another one. Not many come up for sale. Good luck finding someone familiar with the model.

Fwiw, mine 'remembers' what source was selected. Very nice, fat H/K sound, and lots of it.

How did you come upon yours? (Mine was just dumb luck.)

Not much room inside it to work huh? The first time I opened the case, I knew I was in over my head. Nothing 'conventional' about it.

Thanks for the pics. I never had the pleasure of looking into one of these receivers. The store where I worked didn't sign up for the HK line so I missed out, it appears.

It is in fine, fine shape.

Cheers,

David

I got it from a local record store owner who bought a collection of 66 harman kardon pieces. I fix stuff for him, so I am getting it in exchange for service.
There were actually two of these beasts, but the other one had been beat down and hacked, a sad sight.

It is not as bad as it looks for service, though it is far from simple. Almost all of the boards can be removed. Instead of wirewrap they use these clips that slide over the pins, so they can be easily removed. But it took me ten minutes to get mine open when I first got it.

I can't wait to recap this thing.

I couldn't find many pictures of it, and almost none of the inside, so I got a friend to help me get

I'm really jealous! Not been into the receiver scene for ages, but that was the one I really wanted but never could find. Maybe my all time fav receiver?

I have one also but a few of the touch controls don't work. I have been looking for someone in the PNW to really service this thing but nobody has ever seen one let alone worked on one. If someone knows of a tech that can take the time to do it right, please let me know. I have taken it to a few techs but they are so busy they don't really want to work on it as it's not one of your usual receivers.
(Didn't mean to hijack your thread Raccoon1400)
I love the looks of yours and can only say congrats. They are a very unique receiver and sound great.
(I like how every cabinet is different.)

When I first got mine aux, am, and fm only worked in one channel. I traced this back to a fet on the tape board. But when I was poking around with the scope, it started working again.
There's a lot of circuitry in there for the controls, and a bunch of digital logic ICs.

A long shot, but if anyone has a complete cap list for this thing, it would save me taking it apart again. The service manual only has a partial parts list. I don't know why they didn't bother with a full list.

I have the service and OM manual in pdf. I also have a description from the add that I uploaded with the pictures. If anyone has any other documentation let me know.

Great receiver! I only had the chance to hear one one time, but was impressed with its warm, but still fast performance. A Real Nice Find.
Regards,
Jim

66 h/k pieces? That sounds like old AK member Manitoulin's collection! He is in the Ottawa area also. Hmmmm....

I saw he'd mentioned he had one in a different thread. Didn't think it was the same one. Many of this collection comes through me for service. Citation 16 is here right now too...

Time to look at a restore for this beast.
It sent a big pop through one channel and damaged a tannoy 12"HPD. Now you can feel it rub when you push on the cone. Receiver still plays, but it won't until this issue is resolved.
Driver is going to my speaker repair guy tomorrow morning.

Raccoon,

I'd love to hear your receiver. I didn't even know that HK did a Citation receiver. I've got an HK Citation 17 preamp and a Citation 24 power amp that I love--it'd be nice to compare them with the receiver.

If only my separates looked as nice as your receiver does--no wood cases unfortunately.
