Hi audiophiles (and others)!
I have a HK3480 stereo receiver paired with a couple of Qln Artech 8 frontspeakers that has been working as a charm for almost 14 years. A trend that ended this fall. The sound suddenly disappeared, though switching the receiver on and off by unplugging it completely from the wall socket revived it. The receiver played for several more hours, then the sound cut again. Over the course of a week or so, the time to cut was reduced to a mere second. Also, the sound can be brought back for a moment by switching channels – i.e. from CD to Vid1 and back to CD – though it drops out again pretty quick. The longer the receiver is unplugged from the wall socket, the longer it plays before sound cut.
I tried resetting the receiver multiple times. There's no "Protection mode" message or similar.
I had the receiver to a repair shop, and he was not able to reproduce the problem – the receiver played for two days straight without overheating or anything. We discussed the possibility that is might be a high difference in voltage between the devices I connect to the receiver. When I took it back home I just plugged in the absolute essentials (power, speakers and a phono-to-mini jack), and I measured the voltage difference between the RCA connectors on the receiver and my grid ground. Nothing to talk about, just a couple of mV's. It played flawlessly for a couple of months.
Now, the sound dropout is back. I'm using an optical cable from my TV via a DAC, to the phono CD in, little voltage difference, I'm measuring unstable 0–100 mV's in difference. I have not tried to connect other speakers to the receiver as I don't have any...
I'm going bonkers. Has anyone experienced something similar?
