Harman Kardon ST-5 Rabco Won't Track

After seeing a little discussion here on the H/K Rabcos, I decided to get back to my disaster ST-5. It is in shambles. I am having a frustrating problem with it. Everything "looks" good, but the darn thing tracks slow, in other words the arm leads the carriage. No matter where I set the tracking set screw, the arm always leads. If I drop the arm before I get to platter, just to see how it moves, it moves along nicely, but when I drop it on the record, it seems that the carriage just doesn't move, or moves much slower than it should. A couple points:

  • The belt that drives the carriage roller is in place and properly oriented, and is moving the roller assembly.
  • The threaded lift pin is clear of the plate that lifts it, so no drag there.
  • THe carriage moves freely if I move it manually, and it does not feel like there is any hanging or binding.
  • It doesn't matter where I drop the needle on the record, the tracking is always slow.
  • The arm drop adjustment pin (can't remember the name of it) is clear too, and adjusted correctly.
  • I can see the tracking wheel is rotating, so it is making contact with the roller and spinning.

Since the cartridge does seem track correctly when dropped in the space before the platter, it is almost as if it is not dropping far enough when dropping on a record, but everything seems fine as far as all the normal adjustments specified in the service manual. Arrgh. Anyone run across something like this (LesE, et al) and have any tips?

Is the tracking wheel original? If so, it may need to be changed. If memory serves, an O ring from the hardware store will work well.
 
I was thinking of the mechanism in the ST 7 or 8 (I forget which) which I got up and running a couple of decades ago. Yours must be very different if its an all metal wheel. The one I repaired used a rotating horizontal cylinder on which the tracking wheel rolled. As the arm moved out of perpendicular to the cylinder, the wheel automatically drove in that direction, moving the arm. I don't think this would work with metal on metal contact - not enough friction. You can also adjust the angle of the wheel relative to the arm to make sure that the motion of the arm is proportional to change in the arm's perpendicularity.
 
Make sure the top guide bar has the belt in place and moving properly. That extra belt, on the top guide bar, is only found on the ST-5 and 8.

The ST-5 does not have a top guide bar belt, only the ST-8.
 
Can you post a picture or two? I'm baffled and interested at the same time.
 
Actually, I went to Vinyl Engine and looked at the service manual there. I have to say it's pretty exemplary -- not everyone spends enough to produce as clear and explicit a manual. But it seems like you should be able to figure it out with it's help. Free though you have to register, but its a very good site, so you should, if you haven't already.
 
Normally, my first guess would have been the threaded lift pin adjustment. The adjustment must be made such that when the tonearm is lowered onto a record, there should be a small gap between the lift pin and the lift plate. If not, the tracking roller will not apply proper pressure against the tracking shaft. With the arm cued in the up position, the carriage assembly should move freely along the carriage guide as you have noted. With the turntable turned off and the arm cued down with the carriage at it’s home position, you should feel resistance if you nudge the carriage to the left. This resistance is caused by the tracking roller against the tracking shaft. When you partially lift the arm to the level where the stylus would normally contact a record, you should feel the same resistance to movement. If it moves more easily at this level, then the tracking roller may not be making proper contact with the tracking shaft.

So this is frustrating. I bought this ST-5 on Ebay a while back. It was a really beat up, as-is table, but I got it for pretty cheap. It was pretty much complete, but clearly had been worked on. This one does not have the belt driven drive like my ST-8. Either there was a revision (I don't think so), or I got a pieced together monstrosity with an ST-5 carriage and tracking roller (all metal) but ST-7 structure that holds the carriage assembly. This seems bizarre, but the only reasonable explanation. Sure enough (as most of you already know), the service manual for the ST-5 shows that drive mech with the small belt. My ST-5 does not have it, so I assumed ST-5s do not. Never assume.

..And Les, thanks for the tips as always. I have a feeling this one will never work right because it is a frankenstein of parts from and ST-5 and ST-7, which I have now realized. The ebay seller I bought it from had sold other HK ST's, so he probably was repairing them and pieced this one together from others. It seems I got scammed since the seller probably knew exactly what he was selling me. Buyer beware.
 
That looks like a real nice ST-8, with all the original accessories and box no less, but I doubt he will get $1250 for it. Thanks for sharing that. Makes me feel better about the $350 I thought I overpaid for mine.
 
It's over priced by about a third but it does have much more than most 8's for sale. He has a "Make Offer" on it as well.
 
I'm trying to figure out the mechanism shown in your picture, and not succeeding. but I wonder if it isn't a complete mechanism, but with the wrong roller pulley. I also wonder if a square section ring might put a tread on your pulley. I bet Vinyl Engine has the 7 manual also, and you might be able to figure what you have with both service manuals. Looks like a good project. Good luck.
 
The ST-5 I just got, does the same. Can't get the tracking situated. When I think I have the arm inward drift set, it drifts to the outside. under the restrictor bar. I've been fighting with it all day today. Very frustrating.
