Harman/Kardon TD 420 Cassette Deck tray wont open.

Hey hey,
I just got my hands on a Harmon/Kardon TD420 Cassette Deck (for free) and unfortunately the tray wont open. When I opened the unit up, I found the source of my problem, it seems to be a triangular (sort of) piece that when pushed on it sort of clicks and then locks into place, after that the piece that engages the tape lifts up high enough for the tape to eject, but when I put a tape in, I am back to square one and have to lift up the piece that engages (presses down) the tape and then it will open. Obviously this is not practically does anyone have any clue how I can fix this? Any help would be much appreciated.

I think it's part 12 but I may be wrong. The diagram confused me a tad :)

Ok so this afternoon I opened my cassette deck up to see if it was any of the belts, both of them are completely fine I re assembled the belts back and now I'm back to square one the cassette drawer isn't even coming out any more in the first attached photo you can see the motor and connected cog (circled in green) spins perfectly when the cog circled in red is not in, when I put the cog circled in red in the entire system gets stuck and nothing moves only the motor does but the belt doesn't move with it. Therefore the tray does not move. In the second photo you can see the two bits of the drawer that I have circled. When I press open close button these lock up and even further prevents the drawer from moving. Do you have any ideas?

Sorry to revive such an old thread. I've just picked up a TD420 and have a similar situation in that the cassette drawer won't open. I opened up the case and can see the belt is old, stretched and stiff. The motors are turning, but the belt isn't tight enough and needs to be replaced.

I have two questions for anyone who might be able to help:

1) Where can i find a replacement belt of this type? It's pretty small, probably about 6" or less, made of a thick squared-off rubber.

2) More importantly, any idea how I can remove the larger front gear shown in my photo here? I need to take that gear off to remove/replace the belt, and can't see any obvious way to do it. I dug up the owners and service manuals but they are no help.

Does it just pull off? I didn't want to risk breaking it, so I haven't put too much pressure on it yet.

You can get the belt from Electronic Supply Corp for $3.45. He has square cut rubber drive belts. You will need to figure out approx inside circumference of the current belt and then buy smaller.

I have changed that belt once but cannot recall what I did to get the belt on. Is there any play at all between the 2 gears? You could try and work the belt between the gears, stretch it to make it smaller and pull it through. Maybe try removing that belt to see if feasible ?
Is that a cap on the end of the gear that can be popped off?

Regarding removing the gear, your last suggestion was spot on. With a little prying, the cap comes out of the post that the gear is on.

Last question, for anyone who knows: I'm figuring I should replace the main belt while I'm at it. Any suggestions or things to watch out for? Would Electronic Supply Corp be the best place to get that one as well?

Yes ESC will have a belt for that TD 420 but again you would need to size it for circumference, width and cross section and if its stretched get one thats smaller for circumference.
