Harman Kardon Three Thirty (Nocturne) - added to my HK collection

I have quite a few Harman Kardon receivers now. We had a HK 570i as a kid, and not quite 10 years ago when I got into vintage audio, I picked up one of those, then added a few more, the oldest and nicest at the time, a 630 Twin. Saw this and needed to replace one of my newer ones until I can fix it, and grabbed it. The first pic was the eBay picture. The rest are from today. I just opened it up, looked for any visibly bad capacitors or components, powered it on to see if it would (It did) and then after twisting the knobs and finding them extremely stiff, further opened it up and carefully applied De-oxit 5, then Faderlube F5. The knobs are turn way better now. Bass and treble are still a little stiff as compared to balance and volume. Will see if I can find, or have 3d printed, a replacement cap for the end of the volume knob. Getting ready to put it back together and see if it plays well, and am thinking I may leave the metal case off and store that, to allow for more air. My 630 Twin dues not have a metal case under the wood case, and it seems like it might be nice to let it breathe more. Interestingly, there was some blue tinted protective tape on the right front edge of the receiver where the case hits the face plate, not visible until after I removed the wood case. Anyhow, it LOOKS very clean in there, and seems to LOOK in order so hoping it will just play when I put it all back together to provide office tunes in my home office in an extra bedroom. We'll see! Hi Joe! Yeah, I am fine, in fact better than fine. Was going through some life stuff for a bit, post pandemic in 22/23, and got busy re-booting and re-starting (all good and so much better now) and did not come around here that much. Just played my gear and put some stuff away when it went down until I would find time to fix it, put in other (cheaper but worked) stuff that did work, mostly lower end stuff from a local electronics recycler where all I had to do was clean pots and switches on a cheap unit most of us would put in the garage, and now have a few projects of nicer stuff stacked up. Did not come around here for a while as I was just focused on the stuff I was doing.

My Kenny is still with me but developed noise issues and needed to be re-wired, and it is carefully stored away awaiting those repairs, and that arm replacement I was eyeing a long time ago. I have a guy around here that should be able to help me at reasonable cost so hope to get that going soon-ish.

So all good and starting to figure out which stuff I really want and which stuff I will let go of (other than a couple spares to have on hand).

I have a Sansui tuner in my main system still, and a Sansui turntable that needs the oil replaced on the arm mechanism, and maybe a little other clean up. I can use it, but have to be really careful with the arm.

The only thing bad so far I found was that the wood case was held on by these sheet metal screws, and I am not sure that is correct. It is not what was used on my 630 Twin. Those were brass colored machine screws. I am going to wait on screwing the case back on until I can find out what was really supposed to be in there.

Man that Kenwood is super simple to work on, One or two small boards, a switch and motor. The motor comes apart with 3 screws.

What sound is it making? Id bet it just needs to be lubed. There is nothing really in the unit that can cause sound, unless there is something on the PS board that is failing and being picked up in the signal somehow but not sure if that is even possible as the PS and cart/arm are not connected in any way on that deck.

Either way good to see ya on and hope you stick around, I was in the box for a number of months and was just let back on the site recently so its good to see older members back on!!

Oh yea those may be stock but if i had to guess that looks like someone lost the screws and may have just used those! the 1/4 nut head with the flat head makes me think they are older screws tho.

We can save that discussion for another time when I find time to try to tackle that. I think you are just a bit handier than I am. As far as noise, it was definitely something in the wiring, like the insulation or some of the wiring was going bad or something. Like the ground was not connecting properly or shielded properly or something. But I would have to pull it out and get it set up again to verify what it was.

I went ahead and used those screws, and just replaced one washer that seemed a little too small. And gave it a little lemon oil (I prefer orange as I have a lot of teak furniture and like to use orange oil on it, but it was what was on hand today. Looks great! Don't have time today to set it all up as I need to get to other stuff, but soon!

I did leave the metal case off (looks to be the same one that ships with the ones without a wood case) but glad I have it for if I want to change up the look for some reason. I will store it carefully in my garage full of old electronics stuff. Oh, I got into vintage computers too so have a bunch of that stuff haning around as well! LOL!
