Hartsfield help

like the wooden tonearm on the thorens, go easy on the cartridge in that you haven't identified it yet, and judging by the rest of the equipment I'm guessing Fairchild. That's the flat out baddest mono system I have ever seen. Seriously, dude, get it all checked out then get a bunch of mono records. Get 78's.

Your problem is not likely to be in the speakers. Those should actually power-up pretty will simply with the headphone output from a portable CD player or iPod, at least for testing purposes. I used my JBL 030 mono with a ChannelMaster transistor radio earphone jack for quite some time back when I was about eight.

Does that system hum when the source selector is the "tuner" position? The tuner will, of course, have to be powered. That is some exceptional gear you happened upon.

I'd also suggest that the Mac not be run until it, too, is fully checked out. Likely these were purchased in the 50s at the same time. If this is the case, then they're 50+ years old. You wouldn't fire up that 1959 Thunderbird and barrel down the road at 80 mpg, right? Same for top quality vintage audio gear, too.

Cheers,

David

O.o Great mileage :D

But dshoaf is absolutely right, after half a century, pretty sensitive electronic pieces often need some attending to. Get it checked out and fixed if necessary, then :music:

All I got when I moved in was a free swingset in the backyard.

Your system looks wonderful! That will be fun to restore. What a great system!

Holy crap that's like ten grand worth of free amazing sounding sound equipment.

:ntwrthy::ntwrthy::ntwrthy:

Once you get it up and running get some Columbia 6 eye mono records from the 50s, you'll be amazed how much better 50 year old equipment and records in *mono* sound compared to all but the very best of modern equipment.

Mac tuner and pre, too. Damn! What's the lower turntable?

You got one helluva mono hi-fi system there...

If I were you I would do, exactly what zilch suggested. The Hartsfield is one of the most sought after speakers JBL ever made, next to the metragon and paragon.
