Has anybody ever heard of the obscure speaker brands?

Hi,

Has anybody ever heard of the the speaker brands American Acoustics or Avid? I have a pair each of these 2 speaker brands. They both look like vintage 1970's model speakers. If you know of these brands, then please let me know. If you've physically heard these brands of speakers, what was your impression of them?

AAL American Acoustics Lab = head banger high margin speakers with white woofers
Avids were serious Boston speakers from the AR/KLH etc family.

My father bought a pair of American Acoustics speakers in the late 1980s. They sounded okay, but now I see that they have rotten surrounds. I don't think that I'll repair them. They're nothing special. Avids have a decent reputation.

American Acoustics were one step up from white van speakers, and I believe they were made by MTX. Not bad, but a speaker whose reason for existence was high profit margins.
Avid, on the other hand, was a fairly serious manufacturer out of Rhode Island, if memory serves. They were squarely in the New England school of speaker design -- cost effective, fairly flat frequency response with no heroic attempts at extension at frequency extremes. The original series had the grill cloth (available in many colors) in contact with the tweeter to damp resonances. Later ones had a shaped plastic baffle to give a smooth transition from driver to front panel.
I think they may have been too sobersided to excite the market much.
