So I just picked up this really nice Hitachi HMA-7500mkii with matching preamp and tuner, I was forewarned that the owner had to modify or repair the power supply. I tested it out and everything works as it should, but I was very curious about the dubious looking duct tape... keep in mind that I am still new to this hobby!

Probably had to go digging for a fusible link or thermal fuse buried within the transformer. Might look pretty ugly under the tape.
 
There's no way I could leave that, and not check (or have checked) what's under the tape... it should obviously look the same as the other transformer, but we all know it doesn't.

I'd want to know exactly what was 'modified or repaired', and by who - the manual schematic suggests that the transformer probably does have a buried thermal fuse, so it could have been a thermal fuse that failed just from 'old age', but equally it could have been due to a more serious transformer problem. Was it modified / repaired by someone competent to tell the difference ? duct tape does not usually bode well in my experience....
 
It's probably all he had "handy" to cover the "wound" with. If he used the good stuff, it'll probably do over 100 MPH and stay together. :D

I will not be leaving the duct tape for very long, its driving me insane. However, there doesnt seem to be an issue at all with the SQ, I have been listening to it for about 4 hours now and it sounds great! I am still learning the ins and outs of vintage audio repair so I will most likely bring it to a tech on Monday to have a look and repair/upgrade the amp and preamp. I dont know if the guy used "load-bearing" duct tape but so far she is holding up!:rflmao:
