Has DSP (i.e. Audyssey) Technology Changed Much?

Just curious whether there have been any material improvements in the DSP tech in recent years or if it's pretty much the same.

Wondering if it's worth getting a later model receiver (or at least if this is one logical reason to upgrade among others), or if the older Audyssey and similar tech still works pretty much the same way?

(In my case I have an Onkyo TX-NR808 and wasn't sure if it'll still do the job pretty well or if I'm missing out all other things being equal. Also- I'm new to the forum but did do a search and I didn't see this topic. If I missed it somewhere feel free to berate me appropriately. I can handle it. Probably.)

I'd say, if you're only running a 1080p display, I wouldn't bother upgrading. That was a TOTL receiver when new, and while Audyssey's setup may have improved somewhat, I doubt that would translate into better sound, especially when you consider what you'd need to spend today to get a receiver of equal quality. While there have been some improvements in audio formats, yours already supports Dolby TrueHD. Atmos and other height channel formats are pretty much all you're missing in the audio realm. If you have no plan to add additional speakers, save your money for the time being.

There's so many possible differences what you ask could be a book.

For starters, the resolution and "horsepower" of the corrections has increased with various versions touching on just Audyssey alone.

Your unit has MultEQ. The better/TOTL units today have MultEQ XT32 and also include SubEQ HT, which isn't even listed on the chart. SubEQ HT deals with corrections to multiple subs. If you have one sub then SubEQ HT does nothing, AFAIK.



Personally, I've seen people crow over much smaller changes but, like many things in audio, the value of differences is often individually subjective.

That's a big help- I kinda figured this would lead down a rabbithole, that chart was great, BTW.
