Has my second hand receiver seen service?

I recently purchased a sansui 881. The seller powered the unit up and went through all the functions no major issues, the seller said he bought it from a website and is not sure if ithad been recapped or serviced. My question is there some way of determining if the receiver has been serviced?stupid question except the bias and idles are near ideal. Also the caps are all elna minus the ps decoup's and there appear to be generic make or chem-con small value caps. I would like to recap but question the value if it has already been done.

See if there are date codes on the caps. Codes that are obviously newer than the amplifier would be a huge clue. You can often tell if things have been re-soldered too, the joints will usually be brighter.

just pics of the unit and we can tell if it has geriatric caps or more recent ones stuffed in there.

Under the weather and will have photos tomorrow.
I didn't realize caps have date codes. Thank you for that.
I have put a cap order together just to be safe along with some power trannys.

Here's what old sui caps look like if that helps ... <G>

So for the delay and the pic quality. There are 4 different cap manufacturers that i can distinguish. Nichi, elna, chem, MI and one that is unknown..they're the small black caps 1uf at 6.3v. IMG_20170116_094510.jpg IMG_20170116_094510.jpgIMG_20170116_094510.jpgIMG_20170116_094659.jpg

Is it standard to have pvc tubing coating thermistors and some resistors?
I am getting the urge to start re-cap so its inevitable really.
Just a quick question, I have been ordering mostly ukz, ufg and silmic II. Do the beefy 10kuf benefit from being audio grade?

Pretty much anything in the signal path benefits from being "audio grade" ...

One thing about the Elna Silmic II's to remember ... they DO need to clock some hours to break in properly. You'll usually hear a noticeable improvement after around 50 hours of play time.

Love them Silmic's !

Cerafine's another good option if the values you need aren't available.

PS ... Those were all for the QRX 9001. I did find a set of Elna "audio grade" power caps after that pic was taken.

This I proof of why it benefits anyone to be an AK'er. You're all so awesome.
Much appreciated for all the useful info and help I will try to pay back in the future.

You should start a re-cap thread in AK's Sansui forum. With Sansui there are often model-specific quirks or known-bad parts (diodes, fuse resistors, transistors, etc) other than just caps. Some of the Sansui-only guys may not see this thread here in DIY.

Thanks for the heads up. I will head over there once the project gets underway.

Hey skizo, when you did you QRX did you remove the boards to recap or just in place? Most of the caps are easily accessible but not all.

In place ... more or less.

Only boards that got pulled were the ones on card connectors. The rest were rebuilt in place. Not sure if that was any easier. If I were to do it again, I might want to pull the button board as you end up spending a LOT of time on that, and most of the wires you see there are between the card and an attached daughter card. Desolder the switches, and those boards pull apart enough to work on. One warning ... there's TWO black wires between those boards and the chassis, and you can kill the box if you hook those up backwards. Take lots of notes and pictures, and mark those wires!

Here's all the gory details ...
