Have I Cured Myself Of Opportunistic Audio Purchases?

Mister Pig

Pigamus Maximus
This morning I was on CL, and I came across a lovely pair of JBL L300 speakers about 3 hours from me. The price was attractive, but not cheap at $2750. I sent a message figuring they were gone. Found out there was one other person ahead of me, but they missed their self imposed deadline. It sounded like I could acquire them if I made the trip down.

I thought to my self..."do I need these?" they would need the bass drivers refoamed, but the cabinets were absolutely beautiful. I could sell them at market value if I wanted, which seems to be $4500 ish. Then I thought to myself, " is it worth the effort. is it worth tying up that much money?" When I thought about it, I decided they were not going to be better than my JBL 4365, so why do it.

I decided not to pursue them. And I only feel the slightest twinge of remorse. Sure I feel a bit, as L300 were a speaker I heard a long time ago and have been on a short list. But I let them go.

So maybe its one day at a time. One CL ad at a time. But this time I came out on top and walked away.

I am Mister Pig and I am an audio addict. LOL.

I hear you Mister Pig. I have always loved those L300's a friend had them in the day. BUT, I recently had an audition with those and the 4333's. First up was the 4333's, beautiful, open. Then the L300- I was shocked at the nasal vocals and quite put off. Maybe if I hadn't heard the 4333 first? I feel that the hype and my rosy memories aren't so reliable. But boy, those 4333's!

That's funny I could have gone and checked out a pair this weekend at a low price as well and decided not to. For one thing I just got a pair of 250 Ti, and have a pair of L250 so it was a no go.

Sometimes the best thing is having high end gear. For one thing it cost a lot to try and better or equal what you already have. Or there just isn't that much on CL local to you thats better.

I think you made the right call and I am proud of your strength in walking away. Well done. I am doing the same, a lot more often than I did in the past. :)

Well I am completely enamored with my 4365, so that made the decision easier. But they were beautiful L300's.

That and you didn't want to move those 200 lb beast to try the 300s:D
That and it might be the tipping point that causes my wife to bury me in a shallow grave in the back yard.

Actually I was listening to some acoustic 12 string guitar music tonight on the SP 10/ZYX and I was thinking that I was completely content. This is all I need. It is a mighty fine sound, and it makes music totally enjoyable. All is right in Pig-topia.

Well I think you have the right idea when you started asking about records. When we get our systems to a very good point it's time to focus on the quality of our records. The best records will make the system sound better. When I got my system basically the way it is now, still I didn't have the knowledge I do now with records. However I bought a lot of them and started to learn what was and is the best, now it doesn't bother me to buy a $60, $100 or more records if they are the best. It's a huge contributing factor to all the money I spent on gear to make it sound good.

Crikey, wish I could do that Mr Pig. I've my eyes on a Nakamichi CA-5 preamp I just don't need. I'm curious about how it compares to my EAR 834P copy.

Then there's my issue of collecting esoteric cartridges as well.

Kudos to you Mr. Pig:thumbsup:. Perhaps you should go one step further like I did recently and wean yourself from craigslist entirely. No more craigs to be found on my browser or favorites and it's funny I don't miss sifting through listings of people's junk one single bit either.

OH NO I could never give up Craigs List, there is just too much fine gear floating around my area, for little or no money.

My drug is "the find" ... so I am afraid I will never give up CL. But I have become much more choosy in the last couple of years. I hope it is a gradual revelation to get to the point that you are at... I couldn't COLD TURKEY it.

I feel you, I'm trying to look at as set of klipschorns, why, because the price was right and everyone says yay, but I really should wait on my desired goal of chapmans. I'll likely not make it in time for the Klipschorn as I can't drop and run, and when I do, oh the SO is not happy.

Mr. Pig,

Have read some of your other posts/threads and it sounds like your main system is pleasing you in most all regards right now and so there is no need for anything else but to enjoy your system and summer!

That is until the next great deal on CL
Shows up! ;-)"
