Have you ever felt the loss of intrest in the constant upgrade path?

I think I might be starting to loose my interests in audio upgrade hobby. I've seen it happen before. I’m always been sort of a hobby jumper. I always jump in feet first, and become obsessed with my new hobby, I then try to learn everything I can, then inevitably I always move on to something new.

Audio is defiantly going to be something I’m always going to be interested in, but not at the same level. The reason for this, Is that I have finally become content with the gear I now have. Have any of you also ever felt the loosing of interests in a hobby you hold dear? For the last few years, all I ever thought about in a hobby sense, was the upgrade of my primary system.

I posted a thread like this a couple months ago and my take was almost like yours, I went at it from "where to go from here?" as I pretty much felt like I took my gear, room, set-up, tweaks as far as I could within reason and budget and once I was dont I had a somewhat empty feeling.
I had thought about another system but never did it, I go in waves, sometimes I dont listen for a week but my system and my album friends are always patiently waiting for me when I return.
I think we get caught up in the hunt and goal then we hit a plateau and feel empty when our goal is met.

Is it really loss of interest, or new gear overload? I am always on the lookout for new to me gear. But I occasionally need a break as I fine tune the stuff I have and move components around. I guess I will never be completely satisfied till I hear the Angels singing.

Your post describes where I'm at.

It is just the way it is sometimes but it will always be there for you, sometimes when the weather breaks and it gets nice I get a life and dont listen much as I am too busy enjoying summer fun. So fall rolls back around and I am back to enjoying music. I cant stomach the thought of collecting crap I will never use or need, I dont dig the whole rebuild thing either so all I am left to do is aquire music (and movies as I use a Projector down there too)
but give yourself a pat on the back and a ATABOY for meeting your goal!

I would have to say, "A job well done", as we strive to reach a plateau of satisfaction in our gear, from major upgrades and improvements to subtle tweaks and finally that moment comes, definately a time of reflection at a finished piece of Audio Art and your the artist. Enjoy your creation, share it with others and go play and enjoy your other passions.

i am slowly getting to that point, where I know that barring some amazing score, my budget will not let me upgrade for many years. luckily I have nice gear that I am fairly content with...just really on the lookout for speakers and possibly a power amp.

The hobby of audio and musical equipment will probably be with me until the day I put on the wooden cloak. For me music is a lifestyle choice. This extends to collecting vintage equipment and assembling new systems. There is much to explore & enjoy.

I'm kind of with David here, my only hold up is finacial. In the meantime, I'm happy with the systems I have assembled and an inexpensive tweak here or there, can keep me interested.

That is a good thing. Are you equally enthused about music or just audio? I haven't made any changes in my system in a couple of years but I have bought a ton of music.

I decided a year or so back that I don't want to turn my house into a vintage stereo museum.

Well put!

I have also been spending more money on music than I did in the past...I am really just enjoying music on the gear that I have.

I would say that my focus is shifting away from the gear to some extent and more towards the music. No less interest, just a different focus. I've managed to fine tune my gear to where it is sounding really good to me, and I just can't wait to play more music - almost all the time. Sure, I'll get tired of it at times and put the TV on for a night or two instead, but overall I'm just loving my music and the way it sounds on my rig. I know the things I still want to upgrade and they will have to wait until finances are better. I'm highly unlikely to find anything to improve my system at a tag sale or thrift shop any longer, but I still go out hunting new vinyl from time to time. I'm much less excited by gear "scroes" than I was even a few months ago. I'm a lousy flipper. Sure, I'd buy a Fisher 500 for $50, but at $200 I'd probably pass. I don't need it, the hassle of cleaning it up and selling it to make a few bucks just isn't how I want to waste my time anymore.

I haven't lost interest in the upgrading path, but I've lost interest in different parts of the hobby. I used to collect a lot more, and now I'm looking for fewer but better things. I still have a nice collection but I no longer have this idea that I'm going to own every vintage this or that. Instead, I'll have a few pieces I really like that won't just sit on a shelf.

I think I'm at the point of being totally satisfied with my system. I'm starting to think of selling off some of my collection of components that I don't use much and concentrate on restoring some pieces like my Pioneer SX 950 that I want to keep instead of a lot of components that are not worth restoring.

I'm there. But I can tell you what you can do next!

Start picking up tube amps that need to be recapped and cleaned up and such. Doesn't cost a lot, eats a ton of time and you end up with amps that look cool and sound great.

Fast Eddie is on it. Just got my first tube receiver and i'm like a kid all excited. Been schooling myself on diffrent tube sights sucking it all in.

NOPE cause I'm not on that path. I have the same model amp and major components that I bought when I started this in the fall of 2005.

Only things I have upgraded has been my TT once and I'm done and my CDP I have changed it twice but the stage in the middle wasn't so much an upgrade as using a New DVDP as a CDP until I could find the right deal on a Cambridge 640C.
And I went from Sansui SP-3500's (terrible speakers) to my HPM-100's

The closest I come to upgrading is having my gear restored.

in 4.5 years only a couple sources and one change in speakers.
