HBO to offer standalone web service

As somebody who doesn't own either a TV or a subscription to TV service, and wants neither, this is most welcome news. I will gladly pay for the ability to watch Girls, True Detective, Last Week Tonight and Game Of Thrones without having to beg, barrow and steal people's HBO Go log in credentials.

I agree. I would like to dump my cable service and this is great news.

I need to upgrade to FiOS soon. I can't wait to have the discussion on the phone where they recommend triple play and I'm like, well I don't own a TV and don't need a landline phone. Just give me internet.

They won't let it go either.

This is good news. I just picked up basic cable and HBO in a deal to get 120 Mbps internet for $5 more than the stand alone 20 Mbps internet I currently have. I have used the HBO GO app to stream from my iPad to a Chromecast far more than the worthless cable. I will ditch the cable immediately as soon as HBO launches this service.

I am also a big Roku user.

Another big announcement today is Nexus Watch from Google. So when I finally do get that HDTV for my computer the question becomes Apple TV? Roku? Or Nexus Watch? As a Google fanboy I can't wait to hear about the latter.

Really? You want to watch 'Girls'? I saw a few episodes and the whinny generation in the series make me want to break my tv.

So, what are you guys using for you ISP? Around here that is the cable company. Granted I'm paying a lot more for basic digital cable service with Comcast than I am for the Internet portion but I think the price of Internet goes up considerably if I dump the TV portion. TNSTAAFL, apparently. :dunno:

This is good news! I got tired of paying for all the channels I never watched years ago and ditched everything but basic cable. Netfix and Hulu Plus have been good and the addition of HBO will be great if it's not too pricey. I hope other channels will offer something similar.

Comcast, $69 for basic cable, HBO and 120 Mbps internet. In a year I will drop the cable and my internet goes up to $75, $65 if I want to drop back down to 20Mbps. I know you think you are paying something like $30-40 for Internet, but then they are charging you $80-90 on top of that for a bunch of stuff you don't ever watch. So yes, the Internet cost jumps to about double, but still hundreds of dollars less per year savings if you dump the TV portion.

Having a full cable package would mean I am paying a lot of money for channels and features that I will never fully utilize. I could go either Comcast or Verizon but they are all trying to push triple play plans with low introductory rates and prices that almost double after the first 12 months.

I'd much rather pay just for internet then pick and choose my subscriptions. Save money on a lot of things I will never use. Internet, TV and landline? Maybe the savings are there if you need all that but I for one do not. With online TV options and cellphones (75% discount on my family plan since I work for a telecom) savvy consumers can really cut their expenses.

Unless the major ISPs come out with low cost, mix and match a la carte cable plans I don't think I will ever see the value in paying a small fortune for thousands of channels I have no desire to watch.

I'm rather addicted to my U-Verse subscription. However, if I had to drop subscription TV and just a la carte some channels, HBO would be at the top of my list.

I use HBO Go all the time. I also like the new channel Epix, and some Showtime series like "House Of Lies".
