If you are like me and would rather invest in a quality multi-channel amp plus entry-level receiver(with the features you want), rather than a fast depreciating big-dollar receiver with a good amp section, then read on.
That was the background for my search for an inexpensive TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding HDMI receiver that can act as an inexpensive pre-amp. I was not expecting to find many inexpensive HD-decoding receivers with 7.1 analog pre-outs but I was wrong. I did find a bunch. Since I did gather this information, I thought I might as well share it..
Obviously this is not an all inclusive list but a sample of what I did find. Not all of these receivers are current-gen, so there are some good deals to be had on e_bay/C_L etc.
The Brands that I did look at were
Yamaha, Denon, Harman Kardon, Sony and Onkyo
Qualification Criteria -
1. Should support HDMI Switching
2. Should Decode DTS-HD and Dolby True-HD or AT-LEAST work with 7 channel LPCM through HDMI
3. Full 7.1 channel pre-amp outputs.
4. Should be in the bottom half of each company's respective product line (This is a rather vague criteria but all I wanted to do was to rule out most $1k plus products).
