Hdcd?

I have the Mark Knopfler CD Shangra-La and didn't know it was HDCD until I played it in a DVD player and the HDCD light came on. I noticed it sounded much better than any other CD I played in my old Sony CDP 111ES. Exactly what is HDCD? Is it just enhanced CD or is it mulit channel encoded? I'm wondering why it would sound as good on a CD player that was made before HDCD. AT least I think the Sony was made early in the 90's? Thanks for the help.

I would think whoever wanted his/her recordings to be done in HDCD cares about the sound quality. Knopfler is one of those artists. So even though your Sony CD player may not decode HDCD, the quality of the recording still show through.

BTW, HDCD is owned by Microsoft, so it's also on Windows Media Player as well. There used to be a (incomplete) listed of HDCD-encoded recordings at hdcd.com, but somehow it has disappeared. There's an ongoing thread at head-fi.org that tries to identify HDCD recordings that was not listed at hdcd.com. Here's the link....
