I've got a Happauge WinTV HVR-1800 here that works great, it seems on ebay they run about $50, which is QAM, ATSC, FM and plain 'ol fashioned A\V and S-Video.

I suspect the card I bought on eBay isn't going to solve my problem. I now think it's a playback issue. My hope is that my computer likes whatever software comes with the Hauppauge card. Windows Media Center appears to be recording the show correctly, so at the TV tuner's part of the process all is working.
Edit - Having my doubts, now. I just found a high-def recording of Austin City Limits that is playing fine. Too bad it's only the Coldplay performance

I tried to use Windows 7 media center as a DVR for a while, but it just had too many bugs to be practical. It had some very nice features, but it felt like an unfinished product, and none of its problems were ever fixed.
I used it with a cablecard tuner on digital cable. Some channels had no sound, and some channels were offset by an hour in the guide, so it always recorded the wrong thing on those channels. If it tried to record a channel that it couldn't lock onto, it would generate an error message. Sometimes, it would have 20 or 30 stacked error boxes that I had to click "cancel" on before I could do anything else. If I changed anything about the tuner setup, it would forget my favorite channels, and the QAM to to guide mapping that I had setup manually. Now that MS has officially abandoned media center, there's no chance the problems will ever be fixed. In the end I bought a Tivo S3 with lifetime activation on ebay.

I now have the Hauppauge HVR-1250 PCI Express card installed and it's all working fine with the WinTV software. It works with Windows Media Center, too, except it's not picking up the digital versions of the local FOX, NBC, ABC and CBS channels. That's not a major problem, since I can use the WinTV software. I was hoping to continue using Windows Media Center, but I can certainly live with Win TV.
