headless realistic lab 500 turntable

I have a realistic lab 500 turntable that's missing the head shell, any suggestions on a good substitute for the realistic head shell with out breaking the bank. currently using a technics 1200 mk2 with a adio tecnica head shell, techica d6800el needle that sound great too me. maybe a universal head shell i saw on the bay site, but what cartridge to use?

Pretty much all Japanese S shape arms use the same type of headshell. You can find them cheap @ Amazon.

The Shure R-9000ELWS headshell/catridge is not the heavy, as a consequence the counter weight is lighter than most.

A light weight headshell and a light weight cartridge combination may be necessary. :scratch2:

You could try a helium filled baloon to lift the head end. I often wonder how that would work.
Like reducing mass at that end.

Maybe an OM series Ortophon cart with a lightweight aluminum headshell.

Ah... you beat me to it. An Ortofon OM-series cartridge with its weight removed is 2.5 grams, IIRC. Put one of those into a 7-gram Technics headshell and you might be okay. If not then you could add some lead tape to the counterweight. (Oops... and it seems that Celt beat me on that one!)

My Lab-500 has an s-shaped arm, though it is not as pronounced an s as some, and yes it does need a light combination of shell and cartridge. The Ortofon suggestions are good ones but there are other options.

I'd look for a shure m97ah (integrated headshell) if you are willing to buy used. It's going to be pretty similar to the realistic cart that came with the table (they're both made by shure), and it seems to be more common. I absolutely love mine. Jico and LP gear offer pretty decent stylus replacements.
