headphones not working on Mac preamp. any ideas?

This maybe a stupid question but I just started using my Mac 6100 as a pre and a Mc2300 as an amp since today.

I pulled out the U shaped connectors on the 6100 and plugged the mc2300 into the "preamp" inputs.
The preamp works great but when I plugged in my cans into the phone jack on the 6100 ( there is none on the 2300) nothing.
Is this because I pulled the amp section from the 6100 or If I run the speakers through the preamp, will the phones work?
What am I doing wrong?
I miss my cans!

Reattach the jumpers and try it.

If the cans work. That's your problem. Headphone jacks can get their power from an amplifier section in some receivers/integrated amplifiers.

A couple of Y connectors? One to hook up the 6100 for your headphones and one side to the 2300 for your speakers....


Not sure how that would affect your amp section in the 6100. If it would have an effect at all.

Or a switch box. That might be a better solution. Switch between amplifiers.

The head phone jack is connected via two resistors , one for each channel to the main output of the power amp before the speaker on and off switches. So as you guessed if the amp isn't connected the the head phone jack won't work. If both speaker switches are off you shouldn't have a problem with hurting the power amp section of the 6100 while listening to your head phones. As recommended all you need are two wye connectors two attach your 2300. Set your volume controls on the 2300 to 12 o'clock to start with to optimize for best signal to noise. If your headphones are electrostatic types or very in efficient, they maybe attached to the amp with a lower value resistor than the 220 ohm ones used to the headphone jack.

Thanks! I will give this a try! Just to confirm : a y cable and hook up the new input to the 6100 "amp" input? So technically both amps will be working??

The mc2300 does not have a headpphone jack :thumbsdn:
So i have to ffind a way to get the 6100 jack to work...

and no "risk" for either amp? Crazy to have both amps "on".

There will be no problem running the MA6100 amplifier with no speakers connected to it.
A solid state amplifier can drive a infinite Ω load (IE; no load) all day....

It will not in any way damage the amplifier.

So yes, use the Y lead and go for it.....:thmbsp:
