headshell to tonearm connection

I have a Garrard GT-35P turntable I am refurbishing for my 22 year old son. When I connect the headshell to the tonearm, it seems that I can't get a tight fit. There is a washer, but with or without the fit is not as tight as I have on a Pioneer turntable. Any help?

Can you feel the spring tension against the pins on the headshell as you push it in just a bit to get it started in the threads? When it is in place and tightened as much as possible, does the rubber gasket on the headshell contact the collar on the tonearm? Maybe something is keeping it from going in to the bayonet socket all the way. Could you temporarily try the Pioneer headshell on the Garrard just to see if there is any difference in fit?
